Lidia-Sabina Cosma et al.

Summary: This article presents an overview of the genetic characteristics and current treatment approaches of hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). It highlights the importance of the CTNNA1 gene, among others, in relation to this disease, and emphasizes the need for risk management in diagnosing patients through genetic testing.

Increased expression of the TLR7/9 signaling pathways in chronic active EBV infection

Luyao Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immunological mechanisms of Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathways in different types of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The results showed that there was an increased expression of TLR7/TLR9 in EBV-infected patients, leading to increased downstream signaling mediators such as MyD88 and NF-κB. Particularly, in patients with chronic active EBV infection, the TLR7/TLR9 pathway was overactivated, resulting in enhanced inflammation which might be relevant to poor prognosis.

Gastric Cancer and the Immune System: The Key to Improving Outcomes?

Sara H. Keshavjee et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a lethal form of cancer usually arising from the inner mucosa layer of the stomach. Surgery and chemotherapy are the primary treatments, but immunologic therapies have shown promise in the treatment of gastric cancer. This review summarizes the role of the immune system in gastric cancer formation and growth, as well as the current research on immunologic therapies.

Epstein-Barr Virus is Associated with Gastric Cancer Precursor: Atrophic Gastritis

Kai Zhao et al.

Summary: EBV infection is significantly associated with atrophic gastritis, particularly in H. pylori-negative patients. EBV infection also influences gastric function by decreasing the PG I/PG II ratio. Co-infection of EBV and H. pylori does not increase the risk of atrophic gastritis.

The Crosstalk Between Tumor Cells and the Immune Microenvironment in Breast Cancer: Implications for Immunotherapy

Vincenzo Salemme et al.

Summary: The progression of breast cancer is influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors that involve interactions between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, particularly immune cells. Immune cells in the tumor microenvironment can have dual roles in cancer onset and progression, affecting both tumor suppression and promotion. Understanding the complex interplay between cancer and immune cells, as well as therapeutic strategies targeting this interaction, is crucial for developing effective combination treatments to overcome tumor immune evasion mechanisms and maximize the clinical benefits of current immunotherapies.

Exploiting viral sensing mediated by Toll-like receptors to design innovative vaccines

Rossella Sartorius et al.

Summary: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are transmembrane proteins that serve as sensors of invading pathogens by recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns, and trigger signaling pathways leading to upregulation of immune defense genes. Understanding viral sensing and signaling mechanisms triggered by these receptors can aid in the development of vaccines, and exploring the TLR/virus interplay may guide the design of innovative vaccine platforms.

Prognostic value of modified Lauren classification in gastric cancer

Fei-Long Ning et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prognostic performances of three pathological classifications in gastric cancer patients and developed a novel prognostic nomogram for individually predicting overall survival (OS). The results showed that the modified Lauren classification demonstrated superior predictive ability for OS, and the new prognostic nomogram incorporating this classification outperformed the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition tumor-nodemetastasis classification in terms of discriminative ability, model fitting performance, and net benefits.
