A Novel Preclinical Murine Model to Monitor Inflammatory Breast Cancer Tumor Growth and Lymphovascular Invasion

Ashlyn G. Rickard et al.

Summary: Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is the presence of tumor cells in lymphovascular spaces and is a prognostic indicator for metastasis. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a lethal variant characterized by diffuse tumor cell clusters invading the breast and dermal lymphatics. This study utilized a transgenic mouse model with red fluorescent lymphatics and a dorsal skin window chamber to simulate IBC characteristics and allow for intravital imaging and analysis.

Synchrotron Fourier-Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy: Characterization of in vitro polarized tumor-associated macrophages stimulated by the secretome of inflammatory and non-inflammatory breast cancer cells

Hossam Taha Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the pathogenesis of inflammatory breast cancer is related to inflammatory manifestations accompanied by specific cellular and molecular mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment. Tumor-associated macrophages play a significant role in the metastatic process of IBC through the secretion of cytokines. Gene expression signature and SR-mu FTIR were used to study the changes in macrophages stimulated by the secretome of IBC and non-IBC cells, showing significant differences in polarization-related genes and biochemical changes between the two. This research helps to better understand the potential role of TAMs in IBC.

Vascularization in tissue engineering: The architecture cues of pores in scaffolds

Ping Xia et al.

Summary: Vascularization is a key event in tissue engineering, with the architecture features of pores in scaffolds playing important roles by facilitating cell migration, nutrient, and oxygen diffusion for promoting new tissue formation and vascularization. The pore parameters, including size, interconnectivity, distribution, shape, and surface topography, are crucial factors affecting cells response and vessel formation.

Inflammatory breast cancer: early recognition and diagnosis is critical

Robert H. Hester et al.

Summary: Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive malignancy often misdiagnosed initially. Symptoms include erythema, skin changes, edema, and warmth of the affected breast. Treatment involves trimodal therapy with chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, with an aggressive surgical approach enhancing survival outcomes. Early diagnosis is crucial for a favorable locoregional control rate in patients who complete trimodal therapy.

Advancements in 3D Cell Culture Systems for Personalizing Anti-Cancer Therapies

Andrew M. K. Law et al.

Summary: The failure of over 90% of potential anti-cancer drug candidates in clinical trials is mainly attributed to the inaccurate pre-clinical models currently used. Properly modeling the complexity of the tumor microenvironment through 3D culture models can enhance drug discovery and personalized therapies. Technological advancements in this field show promising applications in improving cancer therapeutics.
