Long Axial Field-of-View PET for Ultra-Low-Dose Imaging of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma during Pregnancy

Joyce van Sluis et al.

Summary: Generally, positron emission tomography imaging is not often performed in pregnant patients due to the risks of radiation exposure to the fetus. However, the use of long axial Field-of-View (LAFOV) PET systems can provide diagnostic quality images with a reduced level of injected F-18-FDG activity, allowing for safer imaging in pregnant patients. In this case, LAFOV PET imaging was successfully used for staging and therapy selection in a pregnant patient with follicular lymphoma, minimizing radiation exposure to the fetus.

Ian Alberts et al.

Summary: Recently introduced long-axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET/CT systems have greatly advanced nuclear medicine by providing higher sensitivity, reductions in applied activity, and the ability to image the entire body in a single field of view. This allows for capturing a wider dynamic range of a tracer and enables improved quantification and non-invasive analysis of human function and physiology. The article shares insights from clinical operation of the LAFOV system and discusses the current state-of-the-art in PET technology, as well as the barriers that need to be overcome for routine clinical use.

Abbreviated scan protocols to capture 18F-FDG kinetics for long axial FOV PET scanners

Varsha Viswanath et al.

Summary: Kinetic parameters from dynamic F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) imaging provide complementary insights for the study of diseases compared to static clinical imaging. Long axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET scanners have advantages over standard axial field-of-view (SAFOV) scanners, including the ability to perform multi-organ dynamic imaging in a single bed position and the potential for abbreviated dynamic imaging protocols. This study demonstrates that dynamic imaging for 10-15 minutes immediately post-injection, followed by a 5-minute scan at 1-hour post-injection, can accurately and precisely quantify F-18-FDG on a long axial FOV scanner, potentially allowing for more widespread use of dynamic F-18-FDG imaging.
