Smart Polymeric Micelles for Anticancer Hydrophobic Drugs

Andy Guzman Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Cancer has been a lethal disease with high incidence and invasive treatments. Nanotechnology provides a promising alternative for cancer treatment by using nanocarriers to transport anticancer drugs. This study aims to explore different nanocarriers and new routes to reduce the incidence of cancer to very low levels in humans.

Nanoliposome-Loaded Phenolics from Nasturtium officinale Improves Health Parameters in a Colorectal Cancer Mouse Model

Fatemeh Taghavinia et al.

Summary: Nasturtium officinale contains phenolic compounds that have antioxidant properties and can inhibit the development of cancer cells. This study investigated the health benefits of nonencapsulated and nanoliposome-encapsulated phenolic rich fractions from Nasturtium officinale on colorectal cancer in mice, focusing on the effectiveness of encapsulation. The results showed that the nanoliposome-encapsulated phenolic rich fractions improved the health condition of the mice by regulating the expression of certain genes in the tumor tissue. This study suggests that nanoliposome-encapsulated phenolic rich fractions could be a promising anticancer agent.

Satureja khuzistanica Essential Oil-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles Modified With Chitosan-Folate: Evaluation of Encapsulation Efficiency, Cytotoxic and Pro-apoptotic Properties

Seyedeh Farnoosh Tabatabaeain et al.

Summary: The study aimed to synthesize Satureja khuzistanica essential oil-loaded SLN nanoparticles and modify their surface with folate-bound chitosan to investigate their toxicity and pro-apoptosis effects. The results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibited selective toxicity against MCF-7 cells and could inhibit cancer cells through activation of the internal pathway of apoptosis and disruption of the cell cycle.

Breast Cancer Statistics, 2022

Angela N. Giaquinto et al.

Summary: This article provides an update on female breast cancer statistics in the United States, including data on incidence, mortality, survival, and mammography screening. It shows that breast cancer incidence rates have increased over the past few decades, driven by localized-stage and hormone receptor-positive disease. However, breast cancer mortality rates have been steadily declining since 1989, although at a slower pace in recent years. Despite lower incidence rates, there remains a racial disparity in breast cancer mortality, with higher rates among Black women compared to White women.

Hepatoprotective effect of nanoniosome loaded Myristica fragrans phenolic compounds in mice-induced hepatotoxicity

Mahsa Rastegar Moghaddam Poorbagher et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoniosome-loaded Myristica fragrans' phenolic compounds (NLMP) were synthesized and characterized. The NLMP showed hepatoprotective effects on mice with liver toxicity induced by L-asparaginase injection. NLMP treatment increased the weight and feed intake of mice, decreased the blood levels of triglyceride, cholesterol, liver enzymes, and total bilirubin, and increased the levels of the antioxidant defence system. NLMP also downregulated the expression of inflammatory-related genes and upregulated the expression of SOD in the liver.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Solubility of Luteolin and Other Polyphenolic Compounds in Water, Nonpolar, Polar Aprotic and Protic Solvents by Applying FTIR/HPLC

Sasa Rajhard et al.

Summary: Flavonoids have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their health benefits, with the solubility of these compounds playing a crucial role in various applications. FTIR analysis can characterize functional groups of flavonoids and serve as a semi-quantitative method for solvent screening and compound solubility determination. HPLC is only necessary as a final step for the most promising solvents.

Lyophilization of Nanocapsules: Instability Sources, Formulation and Process Parameters

Ghania Degobert et al.

Summary: Polymeric nanocapsules have core-shell structure that provide advantages in drug delivery systems. However, instability issues reduce shelf-life and hinder clinical use and commercialization. Lyophilization is a common method to overcome these issues in the pharmaceutical industry, especially for labile compounds.
