A survival prediction model via interpretable machine learning for patients with oropharyngeal cancer following radiotherapy

Xiaoying Pan et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore interpretable machine learning methods for predicting survival in patients with Oropharyngeal-Cancer (OPC) and adding more prognosis value. A multi-level dimension reduction algorithm was proposed to remove redundant/irrelevant features, and an interpretable model was constructed using the SHAP algorithm to quantify the contribution of each feature to the XGBoost decision. The results showed that patient characteristics and imaging features can be used to predict the overall survival of OPC patients, and the developed patient-specific survival prediction model can contribute to personalized treatment decisions.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Simulation CT-based radiomics for prediction of response after neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer

Pierluigi Bonomo et al.

Summary: The discriminative ability of a simulation CT-based radiomics signature for predicting response to neoadjuvant chemo-radiation in patients with locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma was investigated. The study demonstrated that radiomics-based data mining from simulation CT scans can provide a fair accuracy in predicting response to neoadjuvant chemo-radiation.

CT-Guided Survival Prediction of Esophageal Cancer

Zhenyu Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning-based survival prediction framework for evaluating clinical outcomes of esophageal cancer patients before concurrent chemoradiotherapy. The framework consists of a 3D Coordinate Attention Convolutional Autoencoder and an uncertainty-based jointly Optimizing Cox Model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy.

Timing to achieve the highest rate of pCR after preoperative radiochemotherapy in rectal cancer: a pooled analysis of 3085 patients from 7 randomized trials

Maria Antonietta Gambacorta et al.

Summary: The optimal timing of surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer remains controversial. A study found that lengthening the surgical interval had a favorable impact on achieving a pathological complete response, with the best results seen at a 10-week interval.

Integrating Multiomics Information in Deep Learning Architectures for Joint Actuarial Outcome Prediction in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients After Radiation Therapy

Sunan Cui et al.

Summary: The study introduced novel actuarial deep learning neural network architectures for joint prediction in stage III non-small cell lung cancer patients, integrating complex multiomics information and time-to-event data, outperforming traditional models in predicting radiation therapy outcomes like radiation pneumonitis and local control. The proposed models showed promising performance in model evaluation, testing, and external validation, highlighting the effectiveness of incorporating multiomics information in deep learning frameworks.

Repeatability of CBCT radiomic features and their correlation with CT radiomic features for prostate cancer

Rodrigo Delgadillo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the quality of CBCT-based radiomic features and their relationship with reconstruction and preprocessing methods. It was found that CBCT radiomic features are generally more repeatable than reproducible, and certain features from specific classes showed high levels of repeatability and reproducibility. The study suggests that improving repeatability of CBCT radiomic features through reconstruction and preprocessing methods may decrease their reproducibility.

Delta radiomics: a systematic review

Valerio Nardone et al.

Summary: Background radiomics and delta radiomics play important roles in medical imaging, correlating with biological features and clinical endpoints, as well as analyzing feature variations. Studies were categorized by disease types, with an overall low quality assessment, leading to potentially inconsistent and unstable conclusions in the current literature. Prospective and multicenter studies are necessary for further clinical validation of delta radiomics approaches.
