Intraoral Ultrasonography for Periodontal Tissue Exploration: A Review

Matthieu Renaud et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the potential of ultrasound imaging in periodontal tissue exploration for visualizing anatomical structures and evaluating clinical reliability. A search of the MEDLINE database identified relevant studies published from 2000 to March 2022, resulting in 245 records and 15 included papers. The use of intraoral ultrasound has been shown to allow precise examination of oral tissues and measurement of periodontal structures, suggesting a paradigm shift in periodontal disease diagnosis and follow-up. However, there is a need for further research to develop dedicated clinical devices and explore the applications of periodontal ultrasound.

The feasibility of ultrasonography for the measurement of periodontal and peri-implant phenotype: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Shengchi Fan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of ultrasonography (US) for measuring buccal tissue thickness in periodontal and peri-implant areas and compare its reliability with traditional techniques. The findings suggest that ultrasonography may be a reliable method for monitoring periodontal and peri-implant phenotype, but further research is needed to confirm the results.

Diagnostic application of intraoral ultrasonography to assess furcation involvement in mandibular first molars

Ray Tanaka et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the accuracy of intraoral ultrasonography (USG) and conventional periodontal examinations in detection and classification of furcation involvement, and to compare it with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The results showed that intraoral USG had a similar performance to CBCT in diagnosing and classifying furcation involvement, without ionizing radiation.

Prediction of nodal metastasis based on intraoral sonographic findings of the primary lesion in early-stage tongue cancer

S. Kawano et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between intraoral ultrasonography findings and pathological findings of tongue cancers, as well as to assess the predictive value of intraoral ultrasonography for detecting nodal metastasis. The study found a positive correlation between the depth of invasion on intraoral ultrasonography and pathological invasion depth. In addition, the margin shape of the primary tumor and the presence of peritumoral vascularity assessed by power Doppler ultrasonography were associated with nodal metastasis.

Influence of immediate postoperative gingival thickness and gingival margin position on the outcomes of root coverage therapy: A 6 months prospective case series study using 3D digital measuring methods

Gonzalo Blasi et al.

Summary: This study investigated linear and volumetric changes after treating gingival recessions with a modified coronally advanced tunnel technique and acellular dermal matrix. The results showed a decrease in recession depth and area, and an increase in keratinized tissue width, marginal gingival thickness, and mucosal volume after 6 months. There was a strong correlation between postoperative gingival thickness gains and complete root coverage at 6 months.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of CBCT in determining gingival thickness. The results show that there is no significant difference between CBCT and transgingival probing in measuring gingival tissue thickness. The confidence in the cumulative evidence is considered low according to the GRADE criterion.

Digital evaluation of facial peri-implant mucosal thickness and its impact on dental implant aesthetics

Amr Khorshed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the features of buccal peri-implant mucosa to natural gingiva in the aesthetic area. The results showed that the mucosa around implant sites were thicker compared to tooth sites. There was a color difference between the peri-implant mucosa and the gingiva, but this difference was not related to mucosal thickness. Patients reported higher aesthetic satisfaction with sites that had thicker and comparatively lighter mucosa.

Methods to assess tooth gingival thickness and diagnose gingival phenotypes: A systematic review

Jiangyue Wang et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to explore the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT and ultrasound for gingival thickness measurement. The results showed no significant difference between CBCT measurement and transgingival probing in both anterior and posterior dentition. A moderate correlation was observed between CBCT and transgingival probing, while a weak correlation was found between ultrasound measurement and transgingival probing.

Assessment of Gingival Thickness Using CBCT Compared to Transgingival Probing and Its Correlation with Labial Bone Defects: A Cross-Sectional Study

Mohamed El Khalifa et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy and repeatability of CBCT for measuring gingival thickness and its correlation with labial bone defects. The results showed that CBCT demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy and minimal discrepancies compared to transgingival probing. Additionally, the presence of dehiscence and fenestration defects was positively correlated with thin gingival phenotype.
