The fate of concomitant mild mitral regurgitation in aortic insufficiency: A neglected subject

Summary: This study aimed to define the long-term outcomes of mild mitral regurgitation (MR) after aortic valve surgery (AVS) and identify the risk factors for deterioration. The results showed that progression of mild MR is rare after AVS, but rheumatic aortic insufficiency (AI) and preoperative atrial fibrillation increase the likelihood of MR deterioration. Careful follow-up is recommended for these patients.

Regular physical activity has been proven to reduce mortality rates, but the hemodynamic changes during exercise may worsen the progression of MV disease and potentially trigger major cardiac events. It is important to define criteria for exercise prescription and competitive sport participation in young patients with HVD, balancing the benefits and risks. This review provides an overview of MV disease and encourages physicians to incorporate exercise in their practice when appropriate.

Impact of aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis on organic and functional mitral regurgitation

Absence of atrial fibrillation in organic MR, iAVA <= 0.40 cm(2) in functional MR, and mitral annulus diameter < 3 cm and QRS duration < 115 ms in the overall population are associated with MR improvement. Lack of improvement in organic MR is associated with higher mortality.
