The presence of Enterococcus faecalis in saliva as a risk factor for endodontic infection

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis in saliva and root canals and its correlation with pulpal and periapical conditions. E. faecalis was found in both root canal and saliva samples, and the occurrence of E. faecalis in saliva was strongly associated with its detection in the root canals. The presence of E. faecalis in root canals before treatment was associated with a higher odds of having periapical lesions.

Orifice barriers to prevent coronal microleakage after root canal treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review aimed to compare the efficiency of orifice barriers in preventing coronal microleakage in vitro. The addition of orifice barriers to a root canal filling was overall effective in reducing microleakage with various materials. Placement of an orifice barrier over the root canal filling is effective in the prevention of coronal microleakage in vitro.

Longevity of composite restorations is definitely not only about materials

Summary: This review study provides an overview of factors influencing the longevity of direct resin composite restorations. A systematic search was conducted to include 33 articles reporting data from primary longitudinal clinical studies published from 2011 to 2021. The annual failure rates of restorations ranged from 0.08% to 6.3%, with survival rates varying from 23% to 97.7% and success rates varying from 43.4% to 98.7%. Secondary caries, fractures, and esthetic compromise were the main reasons for failures. Patient factors, dentist factors, and tooth/restoration factors were identified as risk factors for reduced restoration durability.

Summary: This study evaluated the biological and physicochemical features of bioactive root canal sealers. The results showed that these sealers have good biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and some impact on osteogenesis and inflammatory response. They can effectively seal the root canal and have antimicrobial activity.
