Speech perception and hearing effort using a new active middle ear implant audio processor

Torsten Rahne et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the audiological performance and subjective satisfaction of the SAMBA 2 audio processor compared to its predecessor SAMBA. Results showed that SAMBA 2 performed significantly better in speech and subjective satisfaction than SAMBA. Patients with a VSB implant could benefit from upgrading to SAMBA 2.

Speech perception in noise in patients with idiopathic sudden hearing loss

Ryosuke Kitoh et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively enrolled 93 patients with idiopathic unilateral SSNHL to assess their speech perception in noise. The results showed that the percentage of correct answers decreased as the signal-to-noise ratio decreased, and there was a correlation between age and post-treatment hearing level with speech perception.

Speech audiometry in noise: SNR Loss per age-group in normal hearing subjects

M. Decambron et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine normal SNR values per age group for the 50% speech reception threshold in noise (SNR Loss) on the VRB test. The results showed that SNR Loss increased with age, and the scatter also increased. Age and inner-ear aging may be other contributing factors that affect hearing in noise.

Speech in Noise: Implications of Age, Hearing Loss, and Cognition

Aysun Parlak Kocabay et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of sloping high-frequency hearing loss on speech perception in noise and to examine the impact of temporal and cognitive processing in young and middle-age adults. The results showed that hearing loss, aging, and cognitive decline independently affected auditory performance and started from an early age. A more comprehensive approach may be recommended to evaluate listening skills and identify communication problems.

Is the cochlear implant a successful long-term solution for single-sided deaf and asymmetric hearing-impaired patients?

Iva Speck et al.

Summary: The research indicates that patients with asymmetric hearing loss or single-sided deafness benefit long-term from using cochlear implants, including improved audiological outcomes, subjective hearing perception, and reduced tinnitus burden. Most patients use their cochlear implants daily, with significant improvements in speech recognition and sound localization. Overall, cochlear implants are a successful long-term treatment option for individuals with AHL and SSD.

Do Patients Benefit From a Cochlear Implant When They Qualify Only in the Presence of Background Noise?

Emily M. H. Lundberg et al.

Summary: The study showed significant improvement in speech recognition for cochlear implant recipients pre- and post-operation in different environments, but the outcomes may vary under certain conditions. Patients qualifying for CI implantation may require additional assistance and individual consideration.

Age-Related Difficulty of Listening Effort in Elderly

Chanbeom Kwak et al.

Summary: This study identified the higher amount of listening effort required by older adults compared to younger adults and the different effects of aging and types of stimuli on their listening effort. The combined interaction of aging, directionality, and presence of background noise resulted in significantly different listening effort for older and younger individuals in the same listening situation.
