The unique properties of IgG4 and its roles in health and disease

Theo Rispens et al.

Summary: IgG4 is a unique subclass of immunoglobulin with diverse roles in health and disease. It can have a pathogenic role in autoimmune diseases, tumor immunology, and anti-biologic responses, while also playing a beneficial role in allergy and parasitic infections. The unique structural characteristics of IgG4, such as its inability to activate immune effector responses and ability to undergo Fab-arm exchange, contribute to its blocking effect on the immune response or target protein. Understanding the regulation of IgG4 responses could lead to novel treatment strategies for IgG4-associated diseases.

Frequency and Clinical Significance of Elevated IgG4 in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review

Rajalingham Sakthiswary et al.

Summary: This article systematically reviews the literature over the past two decades to determine the frequency and clinical significance of elevated IgG4 in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The review found that elevated IgG4 levels are significantly associated with RA disease activity and inflammatory markers. It also suggests that IgG4 may serve as a potential biomarker for RA disease activity and a potential treatment target.
