The Role of Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Anastomotic Leak Prevention during Elective Colorectal Surgery: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Lidia Castagneto-Gissey et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the antibiotic prophylactic strategies for preventing anastomotic leaks (ALs) in colorectal surgery. The meta-analysis of 13 randomized clinical trials showed that antibiotic prophylaxis significantly reduced the risk of ALs and surgical site infections (SSIs).

An update on the safety of long-term vedolizumab use in inflammatory bowel disease

Sailish Honap et al.

Summary: This article assesses the safety profile of Vedolizumab in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including long-term overall safety and safety in special populations. The results show that Vedolizumab is an effective and safe treatment, with no unexpected long-term safety signals identified. Safety data in pregnant women, children, elderly patients, patients undergoing surgery, and patients with a prior history of cancer are also reassuring.

Surgery for ulcerative colitis complicated with colorectal cancer: when ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is the right choice

Francesco Tonelli et al.

Summary: This study examines the treatment and outcome of patients with ulcerative colitis cancer (CC), focusing on the role of ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). The majority of patients had mucinous or signet-ring carcinoma and advanced stage cancer. IPAA was feasible for most patients and had similar functional outcomes compared to those without CC. However, mucinous or signet-ring carcinomas had a lower survival rate. Early surgery should be considered when dysplasia is detected in UC patients.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and the Microbiome-Searching the Crime Scene for Clues

Mirae Lee et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) result from the interaction of environmental, microbial, immunological, and genetic factors, with alterations in the gut microbiota playing a role in their development and progression. The use of microbiome-based therapies can potentially prevent, manage, and cure IBD, bridging the gap between basic sciences and clinical application through research findings.
