Attention bias modification add-on to inpatient treatment for young women with anorexia nervosa-A randomized controlled trial

Hadar Dikstein et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of attention bias modification treatment (ABMT) on anxiety and attention biases in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). The results showed that ABMT did not have a significant impact on attention biases, but both ABMT and control conditions were effective in reducing eating disorder symptoms, depression, anxiety, and stress, with no between-group differences in these changes.

An Attentional Bias Modification Task, through Virtual Reality and Eye-Tracking Technologies, to Enhance the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

Franck-Alexandre Meschberger-Annweiler et al.

Summary: Mirror exposure therapies (METs) have been proven effective in reducing body image disturbances. Combining virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking techniques can address the limitations of METs with patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), particularly the negative impact of body-related attentional bias (AB). This pilot study examined the efficacy of a VR-based AB modification task (ABMT) among healthy women and evaluated the user experience. The results showed that VR-based ABMT was effective in reducing AB, and the software received a C-rating in usability.

Modification of Body-Related Attentional Bias through Virtual Reality and Eye-Tracking in Healthy Participants: Implications for Anorexia Nervosa Treatments

Helena Miquel-Nabau et al.

Summary: Cognitive biases significantly impact the development and treatment of eating disorders, including selective attentional bias towards disliked body parts, which reinforces body shape concerns, fear of weight gain, and body image disturbances. This study explores the reduction of attentional bias towards weight-related and non-weight-related body parts through an attentional bias modification task in a virtual reality environment. The results indicate a significant reduction in attentional bias and a tendency towards more balanced attention after the intervention. This study provides evidence of the usefulness of attentional bias modification tasks in a non-clinical sample.

AN-VR-BE. A Randomized Controlled Trial for Reducing Fear of Gaining Weight and Other Eating Disorder Symptoms in Anorexia Nervosa through Virtual Reality-Based Body Exposure

Bruno Porras-Garcia et al.

Summary: In vivo body exposure therapy is effective in reducing body image disturbances in anorexia nervosa patients, while virtual reality technology and embodiment-based procedures can help overcome limitations and confront fears. This study provides evidence that enhanced VR-based body exposure therapy is more effective than traditional interventions in treating AN.
