Dynamic knee stiffness during walking is increased in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Summary: Individuals with ACL reconstruction demonstrate stiffer knee mechanics during walking, with reduced knee flexion angles and moments. This study directly examined dynamic knee stiffness during walking in individuals with ACL reconstruction and found that there was greater dynamic knee stiffness in the involved limb compared to the uninvolved limb during weight-acceptance and mid-stance phases. Knee flexion and extension excursions were also reduced in the involved limb, while knee moment ranges were reduced during mid-stance. These findings suggest that ACL reconstruction patients walk with a stiffer knee throughout stance, which may contribute to the development of post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis.
