Long-term survival of Icelandic women following acute myocardial infarction

Helga R. Gardarsdottir et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of sex on treatment and survival after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Iceland. The results showed that men and women with AMI in Iceland receive comparable treatment and have similar long-term survival rates. However, women have a better prognosis after non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), while higher early mortality after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) may be caused by delays in presentation and diagnosis.

Sex Differences in Outcomes After Myocardial Infarction in the Community

Rabea Asleh et al.

Summary: Women have a 28% increased risk of recurrent myocardial infarction compared to men after an incident myocardial infarction. However, there is no difference in the risk of heart failure or death between women and men in this study. Future research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this association.

Cardiovascular Disease in Women: From Pathophysiology to Novel and Emerging Risk Factors

Lucy Geraghty et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Australian women, with clear disparities in treatment and outcomes compared to men. Differences in pathophysiology, traditional and novel cardiovascular risk factors, and female-specific risk factors contribute to this disparity. Current prevention and diagnostic tools do not adequately consider these gender differences, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention.

The Importance of Gender to Understand Sex Differences in Cardiovascular Disease

Summary: Gender plays a crucial role in cardiovascular disease, influencing the mechanism, prognosis, and treatment response of patients. While established risk factors are known to impact CVD, studies have traditionally focused on male subjects, neglecting the significance of gender differences.
