Cough and cough hypersensitivity as treatable traits of asthma

Kefang Lai et al.

Summary: Cough is a common and troublesome symptom in people with asthma and can indicate poorer asthma control and exacerbations. It can be caused by other conditions such as rhinosinusitis and bronchiectasis, as well as eosinophilic inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Cough hypersensitivity with increased sensory nerve excitability may also contribute to asthma-related cough. Treatment options include inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β-adrenoceptor agonists for bronchoconstriction and type 2 inflammation, and speech and language therapy and neuromodulators for cough hypersensitivity in adults. However, there is still a need for further research to understand the mechanisms of cough in asthma and develop more precise treatments for both adults and children.

Yardstick for managing cough, part 1 In adults and adolescent patients older than 14 years of age

Richard S. Irwin et al.

Summary: Nationwide statistics in the United States and Australia show that cough of undifferentiated duration is the most common complaint for patients of all ages in ambulatory care. Chronic cough management is a frequent reason for new patient visits to pulmonologists. This article provides evidence-based and expert opinion recommendations on the management of chronic cough in adult and adolescent patients (>14 years old), aiming to review the latest guidelines derived from high-quality systematic reviews on cough management.

Yardstick for managing cough, part 2: In children

Anne B. Chang et al.

Summary: 《Nationwide statistics in the United States and Australia reveal that cough of undifferentiated duration is the most common complaint for which patients of all ages seek medical care in the ambulatory setting. Management of chronic cough is one of the most common reasons for new patient visits to respiratory specialists. This 2-part yardstick provides evidence-based guidelines on how to manage cough of all durations in adults, adolescents, and children. It focuses on the management of chronic cough in pediatric patients under 14 years old, providing expert recommendations based on evidence and expert opinions.》

Cough hypersensitivity and chronic cough

Kian Fan Chung et al.

Summary: Chronic cough is a prevalent and challenging condition with various underlying causes. It is associated with cough hypersensitivity, characterized by excessive coughing in response to stimuli, resulting in significant impact on patients' quality of life. Advances in understanding the mechanisms of cough hypersensitivity have led to the development of new therapies for chronic cough in adults. Personalized treatment approaches and phenotyping cough patients may hold promise for future management.
