Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Patients Co-Infected with SARS-CoV2 and Clostridioides difficile

Adrian Boicean et al.

Summary: In this comparative study on 86 patients with co-infection of COVID-19 and Clostridioides Difficile, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) showed better results in terms of inflammatory markers, relapse rate, and symptom relief compared to antibiotic treatment alone. Therefore, FMT may be an effective treatment for improving patients' quality of life and inflammatory syndrome.

A novel biomarker in acute cholecystitis: YKL-40

Eray Celikturk et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure plasma YKL-40 levels and investigate their diagnostic value in patients with acute cholecystitis. The results showed a significant difference in YKL-40 protein levels between patients with acute cholecystitis and healthy volunteers, and a positive correlation with ALT, AST, LDH, and GGT levels. Therefore, plasma YKL-40 levels can be effectively used in the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis when evaluated together with physical examination, radiological imaging, and other laboratory parameters.

Value of monocyte distribution width for predicting severe cholecystitis: a retrospective cohort study

Chih-Hao Kao et al.

Summary: This study found that monocyte distribution width (MDW) is associated with the severity of cholecystitis, with higher MDW values indicating severe cholecystitis and prolonged hospital stay. Therefore, MDW testing and complete blood count can provide simple information for early prediction of severe cholecystitis.

A novel approach to distinguish complicated and non-complicated acute cholecystitis: Decision tree method

Afig Gojayev et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to create an algorithm that distinguishes between complicated acute cholecystitis (CAC) and non-complicated acute cholecystitis (NCAC) using the decision tree method. The algorithm identified parameters such as CRP value, age, WBC count, and gallbladder wall thickness as important factors in the distinction between CAC and NCAC. The algorithm provides a quick and easy way to differentiate between CAC and NCAC, minimizing patient morbidity and mortality.

The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol in elderly patients with acute cholecystitis: A retrospective study

Tianyang Yu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical value of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol during the perioperative period of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in elderly patients with acute cholecystitis. Medical data from 126 elderly patients were collected, with 70 in the ERAS group and 56 in the traditional group. The ERAS group showed earlier recovery in terms of first flatus, ambulation, and solid intake, shorter hospital stay, gentler postoperative pain, and lower incidences of postoperative lung and abdominal cavity infections compared to the traditional group.

Chitotriosidase and Neopterin as Potential Biomarkers for the Evaluation of Complicated Cholecystitis-A Pilot Study

Vlad-Ionut Nechita et al.

Summary: Gallstones are a common surgical pathology and laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment. This study examined the potential biomarkers neopterin and chitotriosidase in patients with gallstones. Neopterin levels were found to be significantly higher in complicated cases of cholecystitis, while chitotriosidase activity did not show significant differences. Neopterin may be a useful biomarker for complicated cholecystitis, while chitotriosidase may have prognostic utility in early patient follow-up.

Evaluation of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) and Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) as Potential Biomarkers in Patients with Sporadic Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC)

Roberta Modica et al.

Summary: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare neuroendocrine neoplasm with calcitonin as its main biomarker. Elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) have been considered as negative prognostic factors in other neoplasms. This study aims to evaluate the potential role of NLR, PLR, and SII as biomarkers in MTC.

Should Procalcitonin Be Included in Acute Cholecystitis Guidelines? A Systematic Review

Clyve Yu Leon Yaow et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the role of procalcitonin (PCT) in the diagnosis, severity stratification, and management of acute cholecystitis (AC). It found that PCT has some value in assessing the severity of AC, predicting difficult cholecystectomy, and postoperative complications, but more evidence is needed to validate its use.

Might simple peripheral blood parameters be an early indicator in the prediction of severity and morbidity of cholecystitis?

Sevda Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of the NLR and CAR in evaluating disease severity and predicting clinical outcomes in patients with acute cholecystitis. The results showed that CAR can effectively predict the severity of AC and can be used as a simple parameter for predicting morbidity. These scoring methods can provide valuable and complementary information in assessing disease severity and prognosis in AC.

Systematic review of the role of indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence in safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy (Review)

Dragos Serban et al.

Summary: With the widespread use of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the incidence of iatrogenic main bile duct injuries has increased significantly. The use of indocyanine green (ICG) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy is still controversial, with no consensus on the optimal mode of administration and indications. This systematic review suggests that near-infrared cholangiogram (NIRC) is a simple, feasible, safe, and cost-effective procedure that may improve safety in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Summary: The study compared the surgical outcomes of emergency and delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis, finding that emergency surgery is associated with more adverse outcomes. It recommends delayed surgery and ensuring the surgery date to reduce the risk of readmission.

Preoperative scoring system validation and analysis of associated risk factors in predicting difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute calculous cholecystitis: A prospective observational study

Sam Paul et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the validity of a scoring system used to predict difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and analyze the risk factors associated with difficult cholecystectomy in acute calculous cholecystitis patients. The study found that previous attacks of cholecystitis, impacted stone, and thickness of gallbladder wall were statistically significant factors in calculating the preoperative difficulty of LC. The scoring system had a high sensitivity and low specificity. The study suggests that analyzing significant risk factors before surgery can reduce the risk and improve outcomes.

Risk Prediction in Acute Calculous Cholecystitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prognostic Factors and Predictive Models

Summary: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the main treatment for acute cholecystitis but carries risks of major complications and mortality. There is uncertainty in predicting outcomes for patients with acute cholecystitis, with TG13 Grade 3 severity possibly associated with higher mortality. Early referral to high-volume specialist centers is recommended, and further well-designed prospective studies are needed.

Significance of Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) in Diabetic Foot Ulcer and Potential New Therapeutic Targets

Dragos Serban et al.

Summary: The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are significantly increased in patients with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and correlate well with DFU severity. Elevated NLR and PLR are associated with complications such as osteomyelitis, increased risk of amputation, and septic complications in patients with DFU. Further studies are needed to set clinical significance cut-off values for these biomarkers.
