Effect of Hemodiafiltration or Hemodialysis on Mortality in Kidney Failure

Peter J. Blankestijn et al.

Summary: This study suggests that high-dose hemodiafiltration is more beneficial for patients with kidney failure compared to standard hemodialysis. A randomized controlled trial involving 1360 patients showed that those who received high-dose hemodiafiltration had a lower risk of death.

COVID-19 in dialysis: clinical impact, immune response, prevention, and treatment

Khalil El Karoui et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant negative impacts on dialysis patients, increasing their risk of infection and mortality. Vaccination can provide partial protection against infection and severe disease, but immune responses in these patients may be suboptimal. Booster doses and primary prophylaxis strategies may be necessary for persistent poor vaccine responses. Specific therapeutic strategies for established COVID-19 in dialysis patients need further investigation.

Seroresponse to Inactivated and Recombinant Influenza Vaccines Among Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients

Harold J. Manley et al.

Summary: This study compared the serologic response to different types of influenza vaccines in hemodialysis patients. The results showed that high-dose trivalent inactivated vaccine had a longer and more effective serologic response against influenza A strains compared to standard-dose quadrivalent inactivated or quadrivalent recombinant vaccines. However, all vaccines showed lower seroprotection rates against influenza B strains.

Global real-world data on hemodiafiltration: An opportunity to complement clinical trial evidence

Linda H. Ficociello et al.

Summary: HDF is a renal replacement therapy that combines diffusive clearance and convective transport to effectively remove middle-molecular-weight solutes. OL-HDF is a widely used kidney replacement therapy globally, but a machine capable of generating online solution for OL-HDF is not currently available. Examining real-world evidence from routine clinical practices may provide valuable insights to complement clinical trial data.

Pandemics Throughout History

Jocelyne Piret et al.

Summary: Throughout history, infectious diseases with pandemic potential have emerged regularly, including major events like the plague, cholera, flu, SARS, and MERS. Many of these diseases are zoonotic in nature, transmitted to humans through increased contact with animals. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogen transmission is crucial for prevention, and traditional public health measures like isolation, quarantine, and border control are still being used to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Global surveillance programs and new technologies are essential for rapid detection and response to emerging infectious threats.

The ROMANOV study found impaired humoral and cellular immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine in virus-unexposed patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis

Maxime Espi et al.

Summary: Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) show weakened immune responses after receiving two doses of mRNA vaccine, but those with a history of COVID-19 may benefit from a third vaccine injection based on their stronger response to the vaccine.
