The Role of Preservation Solutions upon Saphenous Vein Endothelial Integrity and Function: Systematic Review and UK Practice Survey

Georgia R. Layton et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively reviews the relationship between preservation solutions, endothelial cell integrity and function, and vein graft disease (VGD) in human saphenous veins harvested for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The study found that normal saline has negative effects on venous endothelium, while TiProtec and DuraGraft are the most effective preservation solutions. However, the quality of existing evidence is low, and there is a need for high-quality trials to evaluate the potential of these interventions to improve long-term patency in venous bypass grafts.

Efficacy of Intraoperative Vein Graft Storage Solutions in Preserving Endothelial Cell Integrity during Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Francesca Toto et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of three solutions in preserving the endothelial cell integrity of saphenous vein grafts. The results showed that DuraGraft better protected the grafts against ischemic-induced apoptosis compared to saline solution. Prolonged ischemia was associated with extended endothelium damage, and none of the studied solutions protected the vein grafts.

Summary: Based on a voluntary registry established by the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS), the data of cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries performed in 78 German heart surgery departments in 2021 were analyzed. The registry demonstrates the advancements in heart medicine and the nationwide patient treatment guarantee provided by cardiac surgery in Germany.
