Update on the use of allergen challenge chambers in immunotherapy: clinical implications

Petra U. Zieglmayer et al.

Summary: Allergen exposure chambers (AEC) have been used for over three decades in evaluating allergic patients, but detailed technical documentation and harmonization of clinical assessments are needed due to significant variations among different systems.

The use of nasal allergen vs allergen exposure chambers to evaluate allergen immunotherapy

Lubnaa Hossenbaccus et al.

Summary: Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is the main disease-modifying treatment option for allergic rhinitis (AR) patients with persistent moderate-severe AR, when traditional pharmacotherapies are not effective. Nasal allergen challenge (NAC) and allergen exposure chamber (AEC) are translational models used to study the properties, safety, and efficacy of AIT. AECs are more effective for studying multiple participants but require specialized facilities, while NAC is a powerful tool to determine the clinical translation of basic science and animal model findings, especially as new AIT therapies and formulations are developed.

Birch allergen challenges in allergic conjunctivitis using standard conjunctival allergen challenge and environmental exposure chamber

Alina Gherasim et al.

Summary: This study validated the use of EEC for exposure to birch pollen in allergic conjunctivitis, showing differences in conjunctival responses between EEC exposure and direct instillation during CAC. The results suggest that EEC exposure may be closer to natural exposure compared to CAC.
