Novel Insights into Marine Iron Biogeochemistry from Iron Isotopes

Jessica N. Fitzsimmons et al.

Summary: The micronutrient iron is crucial in determining the primary production in the global ocean. Understanding the sources, sinks, and internal cycling processes of iron is essential to comprehend its role in the global carbon cycle and climate change. Iron isotopic analysis in seawater has proved to be an effective tool in identifying iron sources and studying biogeochemical processes. This review provides a summary of the different iron source fluxes and their isotopic signatures, as well as the potential of iron isotopes in studying internal oceanic cycling of iron.

Quantifying the Ocean's Biological Pump and Its Carbon Cycle Impacts on Global Scales

David A. Siegel et al.

Summary: The biological pump transports organic matter from the surface ocean to the dark interior, where it is consumed and remineralized. This sequestration process helps remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere on different timescales. There are three main pathways involved, but quantifying their impact on the global carbon cycle is challenging. This review discusses progress towards understanding carbon export via the biological pump and suggests a path towards achieving a global accounting.

Phytoplankton Responses to Bacterially Regenerated Iron in a Southern Ocean Eddy

Marion Fourquez et al.

Summary: In the Subantarctic sector of the Southern Ocean, vertical entrainment of iron triggers the seasonal productivity cycle, but diminishing physical supply during the spring to summer transition forces microbial assemblages to rapidly acclimate. This study shows that microorganisms have great versatility in using different sources of iron, resulting in highly efficient iron recycling within surface waters.

Summary: In the deep chlorophyll maximum, dissolved iron and light intensity play significant roles in the Fe:C ratio of Prochlorococcus cells, challenging traditional theoretical models. To sustain primary production of low-light-adapted Prochlorococcus, rapid and efficient recycling of dFe is necessary.

Massive Southern Ocean phytoplankton bloom fed by iron of possible hydrothermal origin

Casey M. S. Schine et al.

Summary: The primary production in the Southern Ocean is limited by iron availability, with hydrothermal vents identified as a potential source of iron. A significant phytoplankton bloom occurred in the Pacific sector of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in January 2014, likely fueled by iron of hydrothermal origin.

Constraints on the Cycling of Iron Isotopes From a Global Ocean Model

D. Konig et al.

Summary: Iron isotopes in the ocean are crucial in studying the iron cycle, but the complexity of various external sources and fractionation processes can complicate the interpretation of observations. By incorporating iron isotopes into a global ocean biogeochemical model, research finds that distinct external source endmembers and isotopic fractionation are essential for explaining the distribution of dissolved iron isotopes, with the water column's δFe-56(diss) distribution influenced by regional imbalance of remineralization and abiotic removal processes.

Probing the Bioavailability of Dissolved Iron to Marine Eukaryotic Phytoplankton Using In Situ Single Cell Iron Quotas

Yeala Shaked et al.

Summary: A new approach for quantifying the bioavailability of dissolved iron (dFe) to oceanic phytoplankton was presented. In situ dFe bioavailability was found to be higher than model Fe-siderophore complexes, and the k(in-app)/C ratio is important for predicting dFe uptake rates and residence times in low Fe oceanic regions. The method demonstrated applicability for constraining Fe uptake rates in earth system models, particularly in predicting climate mediated changes in net primary production in Fe-limited regions like the Equatorial Pacific.
