The road to recovery: a synthesis of outcomes from ecosystem restoration in tropical and sub-tropical Asian forests

Lindsay F. Banin et al.

Summary: This study assesses the contribution of tree planting to ecosystem restoration in tropical and sub-tropical Asia. The mortality rate of planted trees was found to be 18% after one year, increasing to 44% after five years. Active restoration resulted in faster accumulation of tree basal area, but tree species richness did not differ compared to natural regeneration. Planting for restoration is potentially rewarding but risky and context-dependent.

Clarifying the effect of biodiversity on productivity in natural ecosystems with longitudinal data and methods for causal inference

Laura E. Dee et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigate the impact of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning and find a negative effect on productivity, driven by non-native and rare species. They develop a design that reduces the tradeoff between experimental and observational designs and demonstrate how observational studies can complement ecological experiments. The results contradict prior studies and highlight the importance of controlling confounding factors and including rare and non-native species in experiments.

Phylogenomics and a revised tribal classification of subfamily Dipterocarpoideae (Dipterocarpaceae)

Tijana Cvetkovic et al.

Summary: Dipterocarpoideae, the largest subfamily in the Meranti family, are dominant trees in wet tropical Asia facing increasing anthropogenic pressures. They have been the focus of numerous studies due to their economic value, historical biogeographical importance, and role in the evolution of the Asian tropical forest biome. Despite persistent taxonomic and evolutionary questions, a comprehensive phylogenomic hypothesis has been proposed, revising the tribal classification of the subfamily into four main clades based on plastome and nuclear cistron data.

For the sake of resilience and multifunctionality, let's diversify planted forests!

Christian Messier et al.

Summary: As of 2020, the world has around 290 million hectares of planted forests, with 131 million hectares being monoculture forests. Monoculture forests provide timber but lack biodiversity and are more vulnerable to disturbances compared to diverse planted forests. Scientific evidence shows that functionally and species diverse planted forests are more resilient and provide greater ecosystem services. Promoting diverse planted forests requires raising awareness, incentivizing diversity in afforestation programs, developing new wood-based products, investing in research, and expanding the evidence base in under-represented regions.

Multispecies forest plantations outyield monocultures across a broad range of conditions

Yuhao Feng et al.

Summary: Multispecies tree planting can enhance tree growth in terms of height, diameter, and biomass, mainly due to interspecific complementarity. Consideration of factors such as leaf morphology and lifespan, stand age, planting density, and temperature can optimize the effectiveness of multispecies planting.

Multidimensional tropical forest recovery

Lourens Poorter et al.

Summary: Tropical forests have high resilience and can naturally regrow on abandoned lands, with soil and plant functioning recovering the fastest. The recovery of forest attributes is interrelated, with three independent clusters identified related to structure, species diversity, and species composition. Embracing secondary forests as a low-cost, natural solution can contribute to ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.
