Field Calibration and PAS-SIM Model Evaluation of the XAD-Based Passive Air Sampler for Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds

Yuening Li et al.

Summary: The use of passive air samplers (PAS) for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) has been expanding. A year-long calibration study confirmed that the linear uptake period of a passive air sampler using XAD-resin sorbent is longer than estimated with a simulation model and much longer than those of samplers using polyurethane or polyethylene as sorbents. The sampling rates (SRs) for 26 SVOCs were determined, ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 m(3) day(-1) for SVOCs such as brominated flame retardants, organophosphate esters, and halogenated methoxylated benzenes.

Cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent investigation of O-methylated pollutant-producing bacteria in three drinking water treatment plants

Yiran Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the OMP-producing bacteria (OMPPB) in three drinking water treatment plants using cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent technologies. Four OMPs were detected and their odor and toxicity risks were assessed. The relationship between OMPPB numbers and formation potentials of OMPs was analyzed, and the influence of treatment process on OMPPB community structures was revealed. New OMPPB and potential enzymes responsible for OMP formation were also identified.

Sources and pathways of halomethoxybenzenes in northern Baltic estuaries

Terry Bidleman et al.

Summary: This article investigates the generation and distribution of halogenated natural products (HNPs), specifically halomethoxybenzenes (HMBs), in the ocean and on land. The study finds that HMBs are present in air, precipitation, rivers, forest fungi, and litter. HMBs volatilize and circulate through the atmosphere, precipitation, and rivers, and their production and biogeochemical cycles are influenced by climate change. The study suggests that BAs and DAME are potential indicators for partitioning and exchange processes.

The Emissions Fractions Approach to Assessing the Long-Range Transport Potential of Organic Chemicals

Knut Breivik et al.

Summary: The new emission fractions approach introduced in this study provides a comprehensive assessment of LRTP compared to CTD and TE. Through three metrics, this method can offer quantitative mechanistic insights and reduce the risk of false positives/negatives in LRTP assessments.

Halomethoxybenzenes in air of the Nordic region

Terry Bidleman et al.

Summary: Halomethoxybenzenes (HMBs) are a group of compounds with natural and anthropogenic origins. This study investigated bromoanisoles (BAs) in the air and precipitation at Rao on the Swedish west coast and Pallas in Subarctic Finland. The results showed variations in the abundance and sources of HMBs at the two sites.

Characterization of Halogenated Organic Compounds in Pelagic Sharks and Sea Turtles Using a Nontargeted Approach

Aikebaier Renaguli et al.

Summary: HOCs were analyzed in marine species from the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, with distinct profiles found in sharks and sea turtles. Halogenated methoxyphenols were the most abundant in sea turtle livers, while polychlorinated biphenyls were predominant in shark livers. In addition to legacy contaminants, a total of 110 novel HOCs were observed in shark livers, with shortfin mako from the northern Gulf of Mexico containing the largest number and most diverse structural classes.
