The effect of lockdown on students' performance: A comparative study between Italy, Sweden and Turkey

Giorgia Casalone et al.

Summary: During the initial months of the COVID-19 outbreak, countries implemented different strategies to mitigate the pandemic's effects, ranging from recommendations to strict lockdown measures. Most countries shifted to online education for universities. The sudden transition to online teaching had varying impacts on students, depending on the mitigation strategies implemented.

Framework for unpacking students' mindsets in physics by gender

Z. Yasemin Kalender et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore students' mindsets towards physics, understand the impact of different mindsets on physics grades, and analyze gender differences. The results show that whether students hold a fixed mindset about themselves is most closely associated with physics course grades, and there is also a significant gender difference. Therefore, understanding the reasons why students hold different mindsets and designing appropriate interventions are crucial to improve physics outcomes for diverse student groups.

What is behind the gender gap in economics distance education: Age, work-life balance and COVID-19

Cristina Castellanos-Serrano et al.

Summary: This article presents a gender analysis of educational outcomes in economics at Spain's leading distance university, UNED, to assess the gender gap and identify the factors causing it. The results show that women underperform in terms of passing and scoring, particularly among those between 30 and 45 years old. COVID-19 narrowed the gender gap during the lockdown period but worsened women's results after the lockdown. This may be due to the additional responsibilities they had to take on.

Categorized and Correlated Multiple-Choice Questions: A Tool for Assessing Comprehensive Physics Knowledge of Students

Shabnam Siddiqui

Summary: An efficient assessment tool, CCMCQs, is introduced in this study to evaluate students' comprehensive physics knowledge level. The tool consists of correlated questions in three different sub-categories to help identify learning deficiencies accurately and guide students to self-correct their knowledge of physics. Data from an introductory physics course is used to discuss the outcomes of a one semester study on CCMCQs.

An Analysis of Student Anxiety Affecting on Online Learning on Conceptual Applications in Physics: Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning

Parinda Phanphech et al.

Summary: This study compares the impact of synchronous and asynchronous learning on students' conceptual understanding and finds that students' anxiety affects their understanding of electric circuits in both learning environments. Although there is a slight improvement in students' conceptual understanding, online learning needs to be improved to reduce student anxiety.

'I don't Study Physics Anymore': a Cross-Institutional Australian Study on Factors Impacting the Persistence of Undergraduate Science Students

Camilla R. Fisher et al.

Summary: University is a critical timepoint for STEM students, with female students more at risk for attrition. High levels of science identity and belonging have positive effects on persistence intentions of female-identifying science students, as well as male-identifying students in more 'gender-balanced' science disciplines. Discriminatory experiences were reported, with female students facing challenges in group work and male students feeling discriminated against in initiatives to recruit more women into STEM.

Effect of culture on women physicists' career choice: A comparison of Muslim majority countries and the West

Saeed Moshfeghyeganeh et al.

Summary: This study examines the lived experiences of female physics faculty members in the U.S. who came from Muslim majority countries, revealing how cultural experiences shaped participants' gender and physics identities. The results suggest that expressions of femininity in Muslim majority countries may have a more constructive intersection with expressions of physics identity in ways that promote participation and persistence.

Gendered performance differences in introductory physics: A study from a large land-grant university

Matthew Dew et al.

Summary: Studies on gender differences in introductory physics found that exam performance and final grades were not strongly dependent on gender, with small effect sizes in most cases. Only the algebra-based mechanics course showed a statistically significant, but weak, gender difference in final grades.

Detecting Differential Item Functioning: Item Response Theory Methods Versus the Mantel-Haenszel Procedure

Emily Diaz et al.

Summary: This Monte Carlo study evaluated Type I error in differential item functioning analyses using three procedures: Lord's chi-square (LC), Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT), and Mantel-Haenszel (MH). The study found that the MH procedure without continuity correction had the best performance in terms of Type I error rate, and also explored IRT model specifications in LC and LRT as well as continuity correction in the MH procedure.
