Temporal-spatial heterogeneity of hematocrit in microvascular networks

Guansheng Li et al.

Summary: Hematocrit, as an important indicator of human health, shows the capability of blood to deliver oxygen. Recent studies have found that temporal-spatial heterogeneity is a major feature of hematocrit in microvascular networks. This study uses numerical simulations to investigate the temporal-spatial heterogeneity, and the results show that it is more pronounced in networks with smaller vessel diameters or more complex geometry. This research has significant clinical implications for more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Biomechanical Assessment of Red Blood Cells in Pulsatile Blood Flows

Yang Jun Kang

Summary: In this study, three rheological properties (viscoelasticity, RBC aggregation, and blood junction pressure) were measured by analyzing blood velocity and image intensity in a microfluidic device. The analytical formula for viscoelasticity was derived based on the discrete fluidic circuit model. RBC aggregation was obtained by reducing blood velocity and analyzing microscopic image intensity. The blood junction pressure was obtained by integrating blood velocity within an air compliance unit.

Dynamic Vortex Generation, Pulsed Injection, and Rapid Mixing of Blood Samples in Microfluidics Using the Tube Oscillation Mechanism

Peter Thurgood et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the generation of dynamic vortices in micro-scale cavities at low flow rates. By oscillating the inlet tube of the microfluidic system, high flow rates are induced transiently in the system, resulting in the formation of dynamic vortices inside the cavity. The size of the vortices can be adjusted by varying the oscillation frequency or amplitude of the tube.

Changes in Blood Cell Deformability in Chorea-Acanthocytosis and Effects of Treatment With Dasatinib or Lithium

Felix Reichel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time an impairment of leukocyte properties in Chorea-Acanthocytosis (ChAc) patients. During treatment with dasatinib or lithium, alterations in red blood cell deformability and an increase in leukocyte stiffness were observed. These findings highlight the need for a systematic assessment of the contribution of impaired blood cell mechanics to the clinical manifestation of ChAc.

Generation of dynamic vortices in a microfluidic system incorporating stenosis barrier by tube oscillation

Peter Thurgood et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for generating dynamic vortices in microfluidics at low flow rates. By incorporating a semi-circular stenosis barrier and oscillating the inlet tube, dynamic vortices can be generated at low static flow rates and the size can be controlled by adjusting the frequency and amplitude. This method facilitates various cellular assays at low flow rates and small sample volumes.

Red blood cell shape transitions and dynamics in time-dependent capillary flows

Steffen M. Recktenwald et al.

Summary: The dynamics and shape transitions of single red blood cells (RBCs) under confined and unsteady flow conditions were investigated using microfluidic experiments and numerical simulations. It was found that the transition time from the symmetric croissant to the off-centered, nonsymmetric slipper shape was faster than the opposite shape transition. Simulations showed that these dynamics depend on the orientation of the RBC membrane in the channel during the time-dependent flow. The tank-treading movement of slipper-shaped RBCs combined with the narrow channel led to oscillations of the cell's center of mass.

Effect of cytosol viscosity on the flow behavior of red blood cell suspensions in microvessels

Wei Chien et al.

Summary: The viscosity ratio C between cytosol and suspending medium has a weak effect on flow resistance and RBC-FL development, with a required convergence length. Although in certain diameter vessels, flow resistance is nearly the same for different C values, in larger vessels, a 10% difference in flow resistance is observed. This suggests that alterations in microvascular flow in pathologies are not solely due to changes in cytosolic viscosity.

Optimizing pressure-driven pulsatile flows in microfluidic devices

Steffen M. Recktenwald et al.

Summary: Unsteady and pulsatile flows are receiving increased attention for their potential to enhance various microscale processes. Generating precise time-dependent flow fields with commercial pressure controllers remains challenging, but this study presents a method to correct deviations and optimize pulsatile flows in microfluidic experiments. By analyzing linear responses to pressure inputs and deriving adapted input signals, deviations between desired and actual pressure outputs can be significantly reduced.
