High Resolution Interferometric Imaging of Liquid-Solid Interfaces with HOTNNET

R. Kaviani et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid framework called HOTNNET, which combines deep learning and two imaging techniques to enhance spatial resolution while maintaining temporal resolution. The framework, tested on droplet impact experiments, successfully obtains high-resolution measurements from low-resolution imaging data.

Dynamical vapour pocket of an impacting Leidenfrost droplet: Evaporation and scaling relations

Wenjun Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of a three-dimensional droplet falling on a hot surface above the Leidenfrost temperature. The findings demonstrate that the droplet morphology is dominated by strong surface energy, and the oscillation of the bottom interface is mainly caused by evaporation and lubrication effects. Increasing the Weber number and Jakob number intensifies the oscillation of the bottom interface. Furthermore, the maximum spread factor of the impacting Leidenfrost drops follows a power-law relationship with the Weber number. For rebounding drops with a small Weber number, the non-dimensional maximal vapor pocket width and oscillation time interval are linear functions of the Weber number to the power of 1/2 and 3/4, respectively.

Dielectrophoretic stretching of drops of silicone oil: Experiments and multi-physical modeling

Rafael Granda et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that pure silicone oil drops on a polypropylene substrate do not react to in-plane electric fields. However, pre-treatment of silicone oil in a humid atmosphere allows the drops to stretch under electric fields. When TiO2 particles are suspended in the silicone oil, the drops exhibit stronger stretching. Numerical simulations agree qualitatively with the experimental observations, but there is a discrepancy in the formation of tongues.

Droplet impact on immiscible liquid pool: Multi-scale dynamics of entrapped air cushion at short timescales

Durbar Roy et al.

Summary: We have discovered a unique hydrodynamic phenomenon in the thin air film surrounding the central air dimple formed during drop impact on an immiscible liquid pool. This phenomenon exhibits patterns similar to spinodal and finger-like structures found in various thin condensed matter systems. We attribute this phenomenon to a combination of thin-film and Saffman-Taylor instabilities.

Computing the viscous effect in early-time drop impact dynamics

Shruti Mishra et al.

Summary: The impact of a liquid drop on a solid surface is influenced by various factors such as drop velocity, surface tension, ambient pressure, and liquid viscosity. Experimental results show that the liquid-air interface begins to move away from the solid surface even before contact, and the lift-off time scales with the square root of the kinematic viscosity of the liquid. Numerical simulations reveal a more complex relationship between lift-off time and liquid kinematic viscosity, and predict that interfacial tension at the liquid-gas interface affects the drop impact behavior.

Drop impact on superheated surfaces: short-time dynamics and transition to contact

Pierre Chantelot et al.

Summary: The study found that the position of the liquid-gas interface after droplet impact is influenced by the substrate temperature, and the dynamic levitation transition of the gas film is affected by air and vapor draining as well as evaporation. In the case of low impact velocity, the transient stability of the draining gas film makes dynamic levitation less demanding than static levitation.

Thin film instability driven dimple mode of air film failure during drop impact on smooth surfaces

Lige Zhang et al.

Summary: The stability of the air film underneath a drop is crucial for the drop contact dynamics during impact. In addition to previously reported contact modes, a new dimple failure mode is presented here, driven by thin film instability when a drop impacts an atomically smooth surface. This dimple failure occurs beyond the inertial-capillary timescale and is initiated by the inversion of the dimple at the drop's central axis.

Levitation of fizzy drops

Divya Panchanathan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method of levitation using active liquids to support droplets floating at room temperature, demonstrating how fizzy drops can generate a gas cushion for levitation. The research generalizes this new state to different types of chemically reactive droplets, paving the way for the levitation of nonvolatile liquids.
