Prediction of the droplet size distribution in aerodynamic droplet breakup

Isaac M. Jackiw et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of rim and bag breakup in aerodynamic droplets, identifying three main modes contributing to the breakup sizes and proposing a new relationship between the dominant breakup mechanisms and the size distribution. It is shown that different instabilities and collision mechanisms play a role in the breakup of the rim, leading to a reasonable prediction of the droplet size distribution.

Growth and breakup of ligaments in unsteady fragmentation

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the physics behind the formation, evolution, and breakup of ligaments on the rim of a liquid sheet, showing how the number of corrugations and ligaments scales with relevant parameters. The competition between geometric constraints, local force balance, and mass conservation determines the growth of ligaments. Predictions about the temporal evolution of ligaments and droplet shedding are validated without fitting parameters.

Extended Lifetime of Respiratory Droplets in a Turbulent Vapor Puff and Its Implications on Airborne Disease Transmission

Kai Leong Chong et al.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

On shear layer atomization within closed channels: Numerical simulations of a cough-replicating experiment

Cesar Pairetti et al.

Summary: During the COVID pandemic, there is a growing interest in aerosol generation during coughing and sneezing. Through simulating the generation of aerosols by rapid air flow through a thin liquid layer, researchers found that the distribution of droplet sizes tends towards an intermediate distribution between Log-Normal and Pareto distribution.
