Transferable Latent of CNN-Based Selective Fixed-Filter Active Noise Control

Dongyuan Shi et al.

Summary: This article proposes a computation-efficient one-dimensional convolutional neural network capable of selecting the most suitable pre-trained control filter for each distinct primary noise, which can improve noise reduction performance. The proposed model can even handle zero-shot noise and has better generalization using the similarity matching method. The Large-margin softmax (L-softmax) is investigated to enhance the model's performance, and an additional fine-tuning strategy is used for control filter selection accuracy in the N-shot learning problem with few known real-world noise samples. Numerical simulations validate the efficacy of the proposed method based on measured primary and secondary paths.

Indoor soundscapes at home during the COVID-19 lockdown in London - Part II: A structural equation model for comfort, content, and well-being

Simone Torresin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the perceived affective quality of indoor soundscapes among home workers during the COVID-19 lockdown, revealing differences in comfort, content, and soundscape appropriateness based on different activities. The study also highlighted associations between soundscape dimensions and psychological well-being, with various acoustical, building, urban, and person-related factors influencing soundscape dimensions and well-being in different ways. Notably, factors such as noise sensitivity and the number of people at home were found to have a negative impact on both comfort and well-being, partially explaining the link between comfortable indoor soundscapes and better mental health.

Assessment of acoustic metawindow unit through psychoacoustic analysis and human perception

Gioia Fusaro et al.

Summary: Acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) have shown great potential for noise reduction and absorption in window design. This study measured and evaluated the effect of an acoustic metawindow (AMW) on environmental sound recordings, combining psychoacoustic and human perception assessments. The results demonstrated that the AMW unit significantly improved loudness, roughness, and sharpness, and was perceived as neutralizing the sound by participants. Additionally, the AMW unit reduced the loudness of environmental noise recordings both quantitatively and qualitatively. Overall, this research opens up avenues for tunable AMMs-based window designs with considerations for physical, psychoacoustic, and human perception aspects.

Summary: Traditional decibel-based measures are limited in predicting annoyance from construction activities. Therefore, a multidimensional approach based on perceptual attributes and psychoacoustic parameters is proposed. The study found strong correlations between perceptual components and psychoacoustic parameters, which can be used to develop an annoyance model for construction noise.

Assessing the perceived indoor acoustic environment quality across building occupants in a tertiary-care public hospital in Singapore

Bhan Lam et al.

Summary: Although hospitals have poor acoustics, the evaluation of the acoustic environment is often done in isolation, without considering other indoor environmental quality factors. A survey conducted in a Singaporean hospital revealed that all occupant groups expressed the greatest dissatisfaction with noise levels and sound privacy. The study also found that the staff were significantly more dissatisfied than other groups in terms of sound privacy and overall environmental quality.
