Impacts of climatic zones on urban heat island: Spatiotemporal variations, trends, and drivers in China from 2001-2020

Xiaolei Geng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of climatic zones on the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The results showed that cities in the south subtropical zone, middle subtropical zone, and north subtropical zone exhibited significant increasing trends in average daytime UHI intensity, while the nighttime showed the opposite rule in general. Multiple factors influenced the variations of UHI intensity during daytime and nighttime.

Measuring the urban heat island of Rome through a dense weather station network and remote sensing imperviousness data

Andrea Cecilia et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to characterize the summer urban heat island (UHI) of Rome (Italy) using a dense weather station network. Measurements were collected during summers 2019-2020. The UHI intensity was calculated using a new approach that relates air temperature to imperviousness (IMP) satellite measurements. Comparisons with a LCZ-based approach showed consistent daily trends of UHI intensity with a fixed bias during the night. The correlation coefficients between IMP and daily maximum, minimum, and mean temperatures were 0.17, 0.81, and 0.82, respectively, indicating a nighttime UHI peak similar to other cities. The diurnal cycle of UHI intensity showed a progressive increase after its minimum of 0.1 degrees C at 10:00 (CET), reaching a maximum of 3.4 degrees C at midnight, followed by a slight decrease after sunrise. No significant correlation between UHI and heat waves was found.

A decision-making framework for promoting the optimum design and planning of Nature-based Solutions at local scale

Teodoro Semeraro et al.

Summary: Urbanization drives land use/land cover changes and climate change, affecting natural capital and altering land energy budget, air ventilation, and land surface temperature. The combination of natural and human-derived capital in urban morphology is essential for urban ecosystem services (UESs) provision to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This study presents a decision-making framework using a case study to assess UESs and promote the best design and planning of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) at a local scale, focusing on human thermal comfort as a priority UES in mitigating UHI.

On the Calculation of Urban Morphological Parameters Using GIS: An Application to Italian Cities

Antonio Esposito et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology to calculate four morphological parameters of urban areas in five cities in Italy. The results show an increase in building height and plan area index from south to north. The proposed methodology can be replicated in other cities and is useful for classification and studying urban heat island effects.

Summary: This study proposed a methodology to calculate spatially and temporally resolved PET values during a heatwave at the city level using a combination of satellite products, in-situ measurements, and Envi-met model runs. A case study on Prato, Italy during the 2021 summer heatwave events was conducted, and the results showed that the hUHTI index derived from the ECOSTRESS sensor was a more suitable tool as a PET proxy compared to the sole ECOSTRESS land surface temperature (LST) product.

Modelling the impacts of land use/land cover changing pattern on urban thermal characteristics in Kuwait

Ahmad E. AlDousari et al.

Summary: This study monitored and predicted the changes in land use/land cover and their impacts on land surface temperature, urban heat island, and urban thermal field variance index in Kuwait. The results showed that the transformation of bare land and vegetation into built-up areas increased land surface temperature and urban heat island effects. The predicted model also indicated a decrease in vegetation cover and an increase in built-up areas, leading to higher land surface temperature in the future.

Review on Urban Heat Island in China: Methods, Its Impact on Buildings Energy Demand and Mitigation Strategies

Liu Tian et al.

Summary: High population density, dense high-rise buildings, and impervious pavements increase cities' vulnerability and exacerbate the urban heat island effect. In air conditioning-dominated urban areas, UHI could lead to a 10-16% increase in cooling energy consumption, but strategies like urban greening and cool materials can mitigate its negative effects.

Summary: This study evaluates the energy consumption of buildings in a city during winter using a model, and validates the model's reliability with real energy consumption data. The results show that the energy consumption of urban buildings is closely related to the morphological characteristics of the city, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation of urban morphology in mesoscale meteorological models for reliable citywide building energy estimates.

Summary: This study examines the interactions and impacts between urban greening, building layout, and meteorological conditions on urban microclimate and thermal comfort. Results show that increasing vegetation can lower air temperature and improve thermal comfort, but may also cause localized reduction in thermal comfort.

Planning of Urban Green Spaces: An Ecological Perspective on Human Benefits

Teodoro Semeraro et al.

Summary: Green spaces in urban areas play a crucial role in providing ecosystem services, but the application of green infrastructure (GI) in urban contexts faces limitations. It is important to consider the feedback between ecological processes and functions, as well as the impact of urban environmental pressures on human well-being.
