Preserving Brain LPC-DHA by Plasma Supplementation Attenuates Brain Injury after Cardiac Arrest

Mitsuaki Nishikimi et al.

Summary: Objective: Cardiac arrest (CA) is a major health burden with brain damage contributing significantly to mortality. This study aimed to understand the protective role of lysophosphatidylcholine-docosahexaenoic acid (LPC-DHA) supplementation on the brain post-CA. Methods: Associations between plasma LPC-DHA levels and neurological injury and outcomes were evaluated in human CA patients. A rat CA model and cell cultures were used to investigate the therapeutic and mechanistic aspects of plasma LPC-DHA supplementation. Results: Decreased plasma LPC-DHA levels were strongly associated with neurological outcomes and brain damage in human CA patients. In rats, decreased plasma LPC-DHA levels were correlated with decreased brain LPC-DHA levels after CA. Supplementing plasma LPC-DHA normalized brain levels of LPC-DHA and alleviated neuronal cell death, activation of astrocytes, and expression of inflammatory and mitochondrial dynamics genes. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of preventing the decrease of brain LPC-DHA post-CA for attenuating brain injury, and supports the causative role of decreased plasma LPC-DHA for brain damage after CA.

Effects of dairy processing on phospholipidome, in-vitro digestion and Caco-2 cellular uptake of bovine milk

Bolin Mou et al.

Summary: Processing and cold storage significantly affect the physicochemical properties and digestion of bovine milk, with changes in crystalline structures observed during cold storage. The decreased particle size of milk fat globules may contribute to the reduced digestibility of milk.

Parenteral Fish-Oil Containing Lipid Emulsions Limit Initial Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Host Immune Responses in Preterm Pigs

William Yakah et al.

Summary: Comparing the effects of different lipid emulsions on preterm pigs, it was found that soybean oil enhances the ability of the host to respond acutely to an external stimulus, while fish-oil containing emulsions increase DHA levels, exacerbate AA deficiency, and limit initial inflammatory responses induced by LPS in preterm pigs.

Improving the oxidative stability of fish oil nanoemulsions by co-encapsulation with curcumin and resveratrol

Qayyum Shehzad et al.

Summary: The research aimed to develop TFO nanoemulsions encapsulating curcumin and resveratrol as co-antioxidants, stabilized with different concentrations of two modified starches. The results showed that PGU2.5 and PG9 emulsified by PGU and PG2000 had the premium stability during storage at all temperatures. This suggests that co-encapsulation of CUR and RES in TFO nanoemulsion-based delivery systems can be efficient for the production of functional foods.
