The barrier properties of sustainable multiphase and multicomponent packaging materials: A review

Binh M. Trinh et al.

Summary: The current packaging materials market is dominated by single-use plastics derived from petrochemicals, which are inexpensive and environmentally stable. However, these plastics pose a threat to the environment as they are rarely recycled and often end up in landfills or littered in the environment. Nature-derived and biodegradable polymers offer potential alternatives, but their barrier properties fall short compared to traditional plastics. Therefore, there is a need to enhance the barrier properties of sustainable polymer systems through chemistry and processing technology. This review summarizes the important contributions and advancements in improving the gas and moisture barrier properties of sustainable polymer systems for packaging applications, including microstructure tuning, surface energy modification, morphology control, and self-assembly.

Enzymatic synthesis of sodium caseinate-EGCG-carboxymethyl chitosan ternary film: Structure, physical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial properties

Qiankun Wang et al.

Summary: Proteins and polysaccharides are commonly used to prepare eco-friendly packaging materials. However, films based on proteins or polysaccharides alone often have poor performance, so combining them is necessary to improve properties. In this study, enzyme technology was used to prepare films with sodium caseinate-carboxymethyl chitosan, incorporating epigallocatechin gallate as bridging molecules and antibacterial agents. The films showed improved mechanical properties, antibacterial activity, and free radical scavenging ability with the increase of epigallocatechin gallate and tyrosinase content. This work provides an efficient enzymatic method to prepare films with good strength and antibacterial properties for improving food storage quality.

Insight into the formation mechanism of soy protein isolate films improved by cellulose nanocrystals

Yaqing Xiao et al.

Summary: This study found that incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) into soy protein isolate films can effectively improve the film properties, including tensile strength, barrier properties, and water resistance. The appropriate addition of CNC can promote the construction of a more homogeneous and compact film structure, while excessive addition may weaken the functional properties.
