Myocardial Parametric Mapping by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Disease

Sruti Rao et al.

Summary: Parametric mapping is a pixel-wise mapping of magnetic relaxation parameters, which allows for quantification of myocardial tissue-specific magnetic relaxation. It has expanded the diagnostic potential of cardiac magnetic resonance and is important for the diagnosis of nonfocal diseases, longitudinal disease monitoring, and risk stratification.

Pediatric Restrictive Cardiomyopathies

Raffaello Ditaranto et al.

Summary: Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a rare type of pediatric heart muscle disease with poor prognosis and high incidence of complications. Heart transplantation is the only effective treatment option. Although RCM has shared hemodynamic characteristics, the causes and natural course vary.

Pediatric Diastolic Heart Failure: Clinical Features Description of 421 Cases

Bo Pan et al.

Summary: This study summarized the differences between pediatric diastolic heart failure and systolic heart failure in terms of primary causes, clinical features, and short-term prognosis. B-type natriuretic peptide has limited diagnostic value in pediatric DHF. Diastolic function indicators significantly improved after treatment in DHF patients.

Cardiac magnetic resonance diastolic indices correlate with ventricular filling pressures in pediatric heart transplant recipients

Wubishet Belay et al.

Summary: This study suggests that cardiac magnetic resonance can be used as a noninvasive method to assess signs of diastolic dysfunction after pediatric heart transplantation. Peak filling rate, global longitudinal and circumferential strain, and left atrial volumes were correlated with pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and could be used to estimate filling pressures through modeling.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy: definition and diagnosis

Claudio Rapezzi et al.

Summary: Restrictive cardiomyopathy is a heart disease characterized by restricted left ventricular pathophysiology, where there is a rapid rise in ventricular pressure but only small increases in filling volume due to increased myocardial stiffness. The phenotypic spectrum of restrictive cardiomyopathy is wide, with different disease mechanisms and presentations. Diagnosis is based on clinical data and various imaging techniques, and treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause of the disease.

Clinical Predictors of Subacute Myocardial Dysfunction in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Associated with COVID-19

Daniel McAree et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess myocardial function in children with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) after hospital discharge and identify risk factors for subacute myocardial dysfunction. The results showed that a subset of patients demonstrated abnormal cardiac function at follow-up, and peak C-reactive protein (CRP) during hospitalization may be a useful marker for outpatient cardiac risk stratification.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: insights into diagnosis and pathophysiology

Summary: HFpEF is a prevalent form of heart failure with various cardiac and non-cardiac manifestations, diagnosis of which relies on multiple measurements. Despite increasing understanding of its pathophysiology, specific treatment for HFpEF patients remains elusive.

Cellular and molecular pathobiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

Sumita Mishra et al.

Summary: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a complex multiorgan syndrome involving the heart, lungs, kidneys, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, vascular system, and immune and inflammatory signaling. It is challenging to model in experimental animals due to its multiorgan involvement, but new animal models and efforts to examine human pathophysiology are revealing potential therapeutic targets. Research is focusing on cellular and molecular pathobiology of HFpEF, with efforts to understand mechanisms relevant to the heart as well as other organ systems, in order to develop more patient-specific therapies and improve clinical outcomes.

Summary: The study found that implantation of the Atrial Flow Regulator (AFR) device in heart failure (HF) patients was feasible and did not lead to shunt occlusion, stroke, or new right HF during the 1-year follow-up. Clinical improvements were observed in certain patients.

Pulmonary Hypertension in the Context of Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Chakradhari Inampudi et al.

Summary: HFpEF, the most common form of heart failure, is often associated with PH, which may be difficult to distinguish from different forms of PH but accurate diagnosis is crucial for divergent therapeutic pathways. HFpEF associated with PH can be subdivided into IpcPH and CpcPH, with the latter having a worse prognosis.
