Acceptability of COVID-19 vaccination in Chinese children aged 3-7 years with bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the COVID-19 vaccination status and the influencing factors among Chinese children aged 3-7 years with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The overall vaccination rate was 69.0%, with lower acceptance among children whose mothers had higher education, lived in urban areas, had low birth weight, a history of hospitalization for lung diseases, and intellectual disability. Kindergarten students and children from high-income families were more likely to accept vaccination. Adverse reactions were reported in 4.7% of the children. The main reasons for not accepting vaccination were concerns about adverse reactions and lack of convenience or knowledge of vaccination stations.

Evaluation of COVID-19 vaccines in primary prevention against infections and reduction in severity of illness following the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant in Shanghai

Dawei Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that inactivated COVID-19 vaccines offer some protection against symptomatic infections and reduce the risk of severe illness. However, the vaccines are not effective in preventing the community spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant.

Long-Term Cardiovascular Effects of COVID-19: Emerging Data Relevant to the Cardiovascular Clinician

Diana L. Tobler et al.

Summary: This review consolidates available data on the long-term cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 infection. Acute cardiovascular complications include myocarditis, pericarditis, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular dysfunction, and arrhythmia. Long-term follow-up shows increased incidence of arrhythmia, heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, right ventricular dysfunction, myocardial fibrosis, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Future research is important in understanding the clinical significance of these structural abnormalities and evaluating the effect of vaccines on preventing long-term cardiovascular complications.

Risk factors for Covid-19 severity and fatality: a structured literature review

Dominik Wolff et al.

Summary: A systematic literature review on the risk factors of severe and fatal Covid-19 courses shows that conditions and comorbidities related to poor health status, high age, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension are risk factors for severe and fatal disease courses. Additionally, organ damage and coagulation dysfunctions are associated with severe and fatal courses of the disease.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) on the risk and mortality of COVID-19 in the South Korean population. Results showed that patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) had a higher incidence of COVID-19, while patients with COPD and chronic lung disease due to external agents had a higher risk of mortality among patients with COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccination in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension and Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension: Safety Profile and Reasons for Opting against Vaccination

Maria Wieteska-Milek et al.

Summary: The incidence of COVID-19 infection in patients with PAH and CTEPH is similar to that in the general population, but the mortality rate is higher. COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for these patients. Some patients refused vaccination due to concerns about adverse events and age had an impact on willingness to be vaccinated. Adverse events were more common in younger patients, but the vaccines were overall considered safe for PAH/CTEPH patients.

Susan M. Taghioff et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from over 73 million patients to investigate the potential benefits of influenza vaccination in reducing adverse outcomes in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. Results showed that receiving the influenza vaccine was associated with decreased risks of sepsis, stroke, ICU admissions, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and emergency department visits in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. Further prospective studies are needed to explore this potential protective effect.
