Multi-scale pore fractal characteristics of differently ranked coal and its impact on gas adsorption

Zhongbei Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the multi-scale pore fractal characteristics of six coal samples of different rankings were investigated using high-pressure mercury injection, low-pressure nitrogen adsorption, and scanning electron microscopy tests. The results showed that the pore structures within these coal samples exhibited obvious fractal characteristics, and the fractal dimensions were greatly influenced by coal metamorphism. This study provides valuable knowledge for the appraisal of differently ranked coal seam gas reservoirs.

Isothermal Desorption Hysteretic Model for Deep Coalbed Methane Development

Songlei Tang et al.

Summary: The adsorption/desorption mechanism of coalbed methane plays a crucial role in gas control and exploitation. Factors such as temperature, pressure, and moisture are known to affect the adsorption process. This study analyzes the effects of high reservoir pressure, gas content, and low permeability on desorption hysteresis and proposes a new model based on dual-porosity media and traditional Langmuir adsorption theory. By comparing with experimental data, the new model demonstrates advantages in fitting desorption data. The findings of this study provide theoretical support for coal bed gas control and coal bed methane heat injection mining.

Effects of pore morphology and moisture on CBM-related sorption-induced coal deformation: An experimental investigation

Peng Chu et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the effects of pore characteristics and moisture on coal deformation during coalbed methane (CBM) recovery. The study reveals that adsorption capacity is related to the specific surface area of micropores and that moisture content can reduce the sorption capacity of coal, leading to decreased gas adsorption-induced coal deformation. The research provides insight into building a comprehensive model for CBM production prediction.

The role of sorption-induced coal matrix shrinkage on permeability and stress evolutions under replicated in situ condition for CBM reservoirs

Ang Liu et al.

Summary: Matrix shrinkage is a unique property of coal that affects sorption-induced strain. Models can quantify the effects of matrix shrinkage, and experiments validate the changes in coal under different stress conditions.

Rapid gas desorption and its impact on gas-coal outbursts as two-phase flows

Aitao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a coupled two-phase model of coal and gas outbursts to define the contribution of gas desorption to the timing, rate, and magnitude of the outbursts. The results indicate that desorbing gas plays a decisive role in driving the outburst and contributes 55% of the expansion energy during the event.
