Electrochemical and Optical Behavior of ZrN-Ag Coatings Deposited by Means of DC Reactive Magnetron Sputtering Technique

Claudia P. Mejia et al.

Summary: The formation of nanostructured transition metal nitride coatings by introducing a small amount of silver has been proven to enhance the physical properties of these materials. This investigation studied the influence of silver on the chemical composition, morphology, and microstructure of ZrN coatings, as well as their functional properties including corrosion resistance and optical reflectance. The results showed that the incorporation of silver improved the corrosion resistance and increased the optical reflectance of the coatings, making them potentially useful as optical protective coatings.

Summary: The study demonstrates a simple and robust strategy for fabricating nanocomposite thin films using a multi-component ZrCuSi single target, produced using computer numerical control (CNC) based direct energy deposition. The influence of energy density on the target surface morphology and porosity was closely examined. Characteristics of the nanocomposite thin films deposited from the ZrCuSi target were analyzed, showing potential applications in automotive engine parts and wear protection.

Summary: The study doped copper into TiN films to enhance biocompatibility and reduce inflammatory response for orthopaedic implants. The effects of different copper contents on TiCuN film structure and surface energy were investigated. Results showed that optimal copper content of 2.4 at.% improved osteoblast viability and reduced inflammatory response, indicating potential application in orthopaedic implants.

Influence of Ag additions on the structure, mechanical properties and oxidation behaviour of CrAlNAg coatings deposited by sputtering

S. S. Rajput et al.

Summary: The addition of Ag into CrAlN coatings resulted in smaller morphological features and more compact coatings, with a maximum hardness observed for the coating with 8.6 at.% Ag. The presence of Ag also degraded the oxidation resistance of the coatings due to the formation of AgCrO2 phase under specific conditions.

Effect of discharge current on the corrosion resistance and microstructure of ZrTiSiN coatings deposited by magnetron co-sputtering

Claudia P. Mejia et al.

Summary: ZrN coatings modified by Ti + Si additions showed improved corrosion resistance compared to binary ZrN coatings and the coatings obtained at I-Zr = 750 mA exhibited outstanding corrosion resistance and high hardness, making them of particular technological interest. The coating structure varied with different currents applied to the Zr target, ranging from predominantly amorphous to predominantly crystalline. The coatings obtained at I-Zr = 750 mA were studied with atom probe tomography to evaluate the interaction of the electrolyte with the columnar boundaries and understand the corrosion mechanism.

Summary: The mechanical properties of transition metal nitrides (TMN) as hard coatings were theoretically studied, focusing on zirconium nitride (ZrN) and its response to pressure. Using density functional theory (DFT), it was found that ZrN behaves like a metal and exhibits high hardness, making it suitable for hard coating applications.

Influence of carbon content on the mechanical properties of TiCN-Cu nanocomposite coatings prepared by multi-arc ion plating

Hui Sun et al.

Summary: By introducing carbon atoms, the mechanical properties of TiN-Cu coatings can be significantly improved, achieving higher hardness, adhesion strength, and wear resistance. TiCN-Cu coatings exhibit high hardness and adhesion strength, with a relatively low friction coefficient at a certain carbon content.
