Improving corrosive wear resistance of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys through heat treatment

S. D. Wang et al.

Summary: The wear resistance of an Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloy was significantly improved after a heat treatment, regardless of the testing condition (air or NaCl solution). The dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear accompanied by oxidation in dry sliding, while corrosive wear was dominant in the NaCl solution. The heat treatment resulted in the homogeneous distribution of fine I-phase precipitates, which enhanced the corrosive wear resistance and reduced wear, corrosion, and wear-corrosion synergy.

Effect of pore content and pH on the corrosion behavior of hydrophobic ceramic coatings

Jiahong Li et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic ceramic coatings were successfully prepared on stainless steel substrates using the sol-gel method. The effects of pore content and pH conditions on the corrosion resistance of the hydrophobic ceramic coatings were studied. The results showed that as the porosity increased, the contact angle of the coatings increased, achieving superhydrophobic surfaces. Corrosion experiments indicated that solutions with higher pH caused greater damage to the hydrophobicity of the coatings. Additionally, the corrosion resistance of the coatings improved as their hydrophobicity increased.

Growth behavior and insulation property of the oxide layer during micro-arc oxidation of aluminium in soft regime condition

Shiyu Song et al.

Summary: Micro-arc oxidation was used to create a high voltage resistance Al2O3-based ceramic coating on aluminum alloy. The coating's microstructure and insulating properties were characterized using XRD, SEM, and breakdown voltage testers. The growth behavior and insulation property of the oxide layer under soft regime conditions were investigated. The oxide layer showed increased alpha-Al2O3 content with longer soft plasma discharge time, leading to outward growth and denser coating with improved corrosion protection. The thickness and density of the coating layer were further enhanced by soft sparks, resulting in a breakdown voltage exceeding 1000 V after 20 minutes of soft plasma discharge. The oxide layer is suggested as a potential material for insulation shielding in etching equipment.

Incorporation of Al2O3 and ZrO2 ceramics to AZ31 magnesium alloys composite coating using micro-arc oxidation method

R. Askarnia et al.

Summary: A composite coating with Al2O3 and ZrO2 particles was prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. The addition of ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramic particles reduced the surface pores of the composite coating. The hardness of the coating increased from about 380 to 620 MPa with the addition of Al2O3+ZrO2 particles and the wear rate decreased about 8 times. The wettability of the coating was improved by incorporating Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 particles, with Al2O3 being more effective than ZrO2. The antibacterial properties of the MAO coatings showed that Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were more sensitive to zirconia and alumina particles than Salmonella typhimurium bacteria after 24 hours of incubation.

Effect of Mg and Si contents on hot-dip 55Al-Zn plating: Experimental and molecular dynamics simulation

Guoqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper combines experiments and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects and mechanisms of different Mg and Si contents in hot-dip 55Al-Zn plating on the microstructure. Both experimental and simulation results show that Mg and Si elements tend to be enriched at the substrate interface and form the Mg2Si phase. The Fe-Al intermetallic compound layer can be divided into two parts, Fe4Al13(Si, Zn) and Fe4Al13, and grows along the direction perpendicular to the substrate interface.

Influence of Electrolyte Compositions and Electrical Parameters on Thermal Properties of Micro-Arc Oxidized AZ91 Alloy

Ekin Selvi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micro-arc oxidation of AZ91 Mg alloy using different electrolytes to synthesize ZrO2 in the coatings. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the coatings can be reduced by up to 30%, mainly due to the formation of a thicker and denser coating and the incorporation of ZrO2. The increased thermal shock resistance is correlated with lower hardness and higher cohesive strength of the coatings, leading to smaller crack formation and spallation-free surface characteristics.

Effects of ageing treatment on corrosion behavior of 7075 aluminum alloy coated by micro arc oxidation (MAO)

Xing Qi et al.

Summary: The effects of ageing treatment on the corrosion behavior of 7075 aluminum alloy coated by MAO have been investigated. The results show that the precipitates formed after ageing play a significant role in the thickness, porosity, and corrosion resistance of the MAO coating. Coarse and discontinuously distributed precipitates at the grain boundary contribute to the electrochemical corrosion resistance. Decreased segregation of magnesium at the grain boundary reduces the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

The role of concentrated solar power with thermal energy storage in least-cost highly reliable electricity systems fully powered by variable renewable energy

Kathleen M. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Policies in the US are calling for the use of variable renewable energy sources that can reliably meet electricity demand despite fluctuations. However, the role of concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) in comparison to photovoltaics (PV) and batteries in a highly reliable, 100% renewable system has not been clearly evaluated. This study finds that CSP and PV do not directly compete, but TES competes with short-duration battery storage. The coupled CSP+TES system can provide reliability in the absence of other grid flexibility mechanisms, and its adoption is primarily limited by high CSP generation costs.
