Imparting bioactivity to CP-Titanium with sputtered TiBN interlayer and electrophoretically grown bioglass overlay

S. Sivaranjani et al.

Summary: Surface-modified implant materials with improved physicochemical properties and biocompatibility are crucial for osseointegration and bone anchorage. In this study, titanium boron nitride (TiBN) thin films were coated on sandblasted Ti plates, and bioglass (BG) 45S5 overlay was introduced using electrophoretic deposition. The bioglass overlaid TiBN/Ti plates showed excellent cytocompatibility and corrosion resistance.

Bioactivity and biodegradability of high temperature sintered 58S ceramics

Rob Atkin et al.

Summary: Bioactive glass scaffolds are commonly used in bone tissue engineering applications, and sintering is often employed to enhance their mechanical strength. However, sintering can lead to crystallization, resulting in reduced bioactivity and biodegradability. This study compared the in-vitro bioactivity and biodegradability of sintered 58S bioactive glass made from fully amorphous powder and partially crystalline powder with the same chemical compositions. The results showed that the sintered 58S produced from glass ceramic powder exhibited higher in-vitro bioactivity and biodegradability rate than that from fully amorphous powder. The initial structure after calcination was found to be crucial in determining the subsequent crystallization during sintering, and the presence of crystallinity and hydroxyapatite formation after calcination played important roles in increasing the bioactivity and biodegradability rate of the sintered 58S.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical activity of WO3-decorated native titania films by mild laser treatment

Tanta Spataru et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of electrochemical WO3 modification on improving the photoactivity of native air-formed TiO2 layers was studied. Laser treatment was found to result in smaller and better dispersed WO3 particles on the surface, as well as enhanced oxygen deficiency and absorptivity. These features, combined with the narrower bandgap, higher donor density, and lower flat band potential of the laser-treated WO3/TiO2 systems, enabled faster oxygen photoanodic evolution and a cathodic shift in onset potential. Additionally, the laser treatment significantly enhanced the photoelectrocatalytic performances for UV-assisted methanol anodic oxidation.

Effect of Ti on the corrosion behavior of (FeCrCoNi)100,xTix alloy

Zhanming Zhou et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of (FeCrCoNi)100_xTix alloy in NaCl and H2SO4 was studied. It was found that the passive corrosion current density decreases with the increase of Ti content. XPS analysis revealed that the passive film has a double-layer structure, with the outer TiO2 and inner Cr2O3 playing important roles in the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Influence of Processing Technology on Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloys

Caiyun Bai et al.

Summary: Ti-6Al-4V alloys are commonly used in biomedical implants, aerospace components, and offshore equipment due to their corrosion resistance. This study examined the electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloys under different conditions and found that seawater provided better corrosion resistance than NaCl solutions, while corrosion rate increased with HCl concentration. Additionally, 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V exhibited higher corrosion rates compared to traditionally processed Ti-6Al-4V due to the ease of Cl- enrichment in pores. The laser power to scanning speed ratio and phase constituent composition of the alloy had minor impacts on its electrochemical corrosion behavior.
