Controlling microstructure evolution and phase transformation behavior in additive manufacturing of nitinol shape memory alloys by tuning hatch distance

Jia-Ning Zhu et al.

Summary: The effect of hatch distance on microstructure and functional properties of L-PBF NiTi shape memory alloys is investigated. It is found that the phase transformation temperatures do not decrease proportionally with hatch distance, but rather relate to a critical value. Below this critical value, epitaxial grain growth and in situ recrystallization are enhanced, while above, irregular grains and decreased dislocations are formed. However, the critical value exhibits high dislocation density and fine grain size, resulting in superior thermal cyclic stability.

Standard mechanical testing is inadequate for the mechanical characterisation of shape-memory alloys: Source of errors and a new corrective approach

Sofia Di Leonardo et al.

Summary: Thanks to its unique superelastic response, Nitinol has become the preferred material in many critical applications, especially in the medical implant field. However, the reversible phase transformation that gives rise to its exceptional behavior also makes its mechanical characterization complex, hindering the assumptions underlying common uniaxial tensile testing. This study analyzes the spurious effects introduced by the unconventional material behavior during uniaxial tensile testing using digital image correlation (DIC), and proposes a more accurate and systematic testing approach.

Effect of laser scanning speed on the microstructure, phase transformation and mechanical property of NiTi alloys fabricated by LPBF

Wenqian Guo et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of laser scanning speed on microstructure, phase transformation, and properties of NiTi alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The experiment results revealed that nickel evaporation and precipitation were the primary factors affecting the transformation temperature and heat of NiTi alloys. Increasing scanning speed reduced nickel loss and widened the transformation temperature range, but also increased the microstructure non-uniformity. Despite different scanning speeds, all alloys exhibited high strain capabilities and excellent shape memory effect.

Control of Ni-Ti phase structure, solid-state transformation temperatures and enthalpies via control of L-PBF process parameters

Josiah Cherian Chekotu et al.

Summary: Nitinol samples were produced using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) technique with systematic variations in laser power, scan speed, and hatch spacing. The control of L-PBF parameters allowed for control of the part's chemical composition and phase transformation temperatures. The laser process parameters had a significant effect on the transformation temperatures of martensite and austenite. Additionally, the volumetric energy density was directly correlated with cooling and heating enthalpies.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of process parameters on the selective laser melting (SLM) fabrication of thin nitinol medical devices, and successfully prints two different designs of superelastic nitinol stents. The results demonstrate that with suitable process parameters, SLM technology can accurately print thin nitinol devices with high density, uniform strut diameters, adequate superelasticity, and excellent biocompatibility.

Summary: This study successfully modeled the mechanical behavior of superelastic NiTi using the Auricchio finite element model and validated it with experimental data. Microscale studies revealed the influence of martensite phase transformation on the material's response. Additionally, the study found that porosity in laser powder bed fusion processes has macroscopic effects on structural stiffness, energy dissipation, and damping properties.

Toward understanding the effect of remelting on the additively manufactured NiTi

Parisa Bayati et al.

Summary: By modifying the selective laser melting (SLM) approach for NiTi, a method called "remelting" was proposed to reduce internal micropores/voids and improve surface roughness; proper combinations of remelting process parameters can lead to fabricating NiTi components with increased density, fewer defects, and smoother surfaces, improving fatigue life and functionality of the parts.

Summary: Near fully dense NiTi components were fabricated using selective laser beam melting with a 55.2Ni-Ti (wt.%) powder. The effect of the manufacturing process on mechanical and functional properties was systematically investigated by tuning the process parameters, showing distinct damping and strain recovery responses in the resulting material. The as-built NiTi parts exhibited phase transformation temperatures higher than those of the feedstock.
