Strain-rate effects and dynamic behavior of high entropy alloys

Aomin Huang et al.

Summary: The novel class of multicomponent alloys, known as high-entropy alloys (HEAs), have excellent properties under low strain-rate conditions. Their dynamic behavior, such as shear localization and spallation failure, is important to study due to their applications in military armor. The resistance to shear localization is related to work hardening ability enabled by dislocation slip, twinning, and phase transformations, while spallation resulting from tensile pulses plays a significant role in dynamic performance.

Shed light on new growth pattern in rapid solidified Ta metal: MD simulation, DFT calculation and CALYPSO search

Yuanqi Jiang et al.

Summary: The lowest-energy and meta-stable geometric structures of rapid solidified Ta clusters were systematically investigated using MD simulation, DFT calculation, and CALYPSO search. The ground-state geometric structure of free Ta clusters was found to play a significant role in determining their solidified atomic structures and evolution laws during nucleation. The coexistence of hexagonal close packed (hcp) and slightly distorted icosahedral clusters in Ta solid state was explained by the high energy stability of free Ta26-C2v (B) cluster. The thermodynamic stability and electronic structure stability of Ta clusters were influenced by their size, binding energy, and number of electrons on the Fermi level (N(EF)).

Nanoscale origin of the crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation and damage tolerance of Cantor alloys at cryogenic temperatures

Weiming Ji et al.

Summary: This study provides atomistic insights into the solid-state amorphization and deformation mechanisms of Cantor alloys at cryogenic temperatures. It is found that low stacking fault energy leads to the formation of multi-dislocation junctions, resulting in amorphization. Deformation mechanisms in the amorphous/crystalline dual phase regions include high-density partial dislocations and multi-dislocation junctions in the crystalline region, as well as radiation-shaped shear bands and amorphous bridges in the amorphous region, which are rarely observed in conventional alloys at low temperatures.

Tailoring microstructure of metallic glass for delocalized plasticity by pressure annealing: Forward and inverse studies

Y. Tang et al.

Summary: Pressure annealing has the potential to tailor the microstructure and mechanical behavior of metallic glasses, as demonstrated through a combination of experiments, simulations, and machine learning in this study. The transition of deformation mode from localized to delocalized in pressure-annealed metallic glasses is mainly governed by variations in atomic packing structure induced by pressure annealing, providing insights into fine-tuning their mechanical properties.

Theory of Pressure-Induced Rejuvenation and Strain Hardening in Metallic Glasses

Anh D. Phan et al.

Summary: The theoretical study predicts compression-induced rejuvenation and strain hardening in metallic glasses, mainly controlled by local cage dynamics. External pressure restricts dynamical constraints and slows down atomic mobility, inducing a rejuvenated metastable state at a higher energy. Consequently, compressed metallic glasses can rejuvenate and exhibit reversible relaxation, leading to strain hardening in mechanical deformation experiments. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Lowest-energy structural and electronic properties of CunZr13-n (n=3-10) clusters in metallic glasses via CALYPSO search and density functional theory calculations

Yuanqi Jiang et al.

Summary: This study identified novel ground-state geometric structures of CunZr(13-n) (n = 3-10) clusters through an unbiased structure search and density functional theory calculations, proposing three new parameters to evaluate the relative chemical activity dependence of the chemical composition. The lowest-energy structures of Cu-Zr clusters exhibit irregular nested structures based on a pentagonal bipyramid with low symmetry, and the entire evolutionary configuration shows a stable transient from Cu3Zr10 to Cu10Zr3. Analysis of the electronic shell structure suggests that the chemical compositions of Cu6Zr7 and Cu8Zr5 clusters have good correspondence with the best glass formers, mainly due to the odd and even number of valence electrons.

Direct observation of atomic-level fractal structure in a metallic glass membrane

Hongyu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study directly observed the fractal atomic structure in thin metallic glassy membranes, with the fractal dimension depending on atomic density. The atomic configuration in the metallic glass membrane consists of various polygons with bonding angles concentrated on 45 degrees-55 degrees. The fractal atomic structure is consistent with percolation theory analysis and may explain the enhanced relaxation dynamics and ease of glass transition observed in thin metallic glassy films or surfaces.

Observation of cavitation governing fracture in glasses

Lai-Quan Shen et al.

Summary: The study provides experimental evidence that confirms the role of cavitation mechanism in glass fracture, revealing that self-organized nucleation, growth, and coalescence of nanocavities lead to the appearance of nanopatterns on fracture surfaces. This confirms the presence of nanoscale ductility in fracture of nominally brittle glasses.

Atomic-level mechanism of spallation microvoid nucleation in medium entropy alloys under shock loading

Xie ZhouCan et al.

Summary: As impact velocity increases, microvoid nucleation in medium entropy alloys transitions from intergranular to intragranular locations to release redundant energy. Microvoids nucleate in the poor-Cr region during intragranular nucleation, attributed to weak metallic bonds and sparse free electrons. Intergranular nucleation involves the formation of a Franke-like dislocation source, leading to significant dislocation accumulation and increased stored energy, promoting microvoid nucleation.

Origin of strain hardening in monolithic metallic glasses

X. Yuan et al.

Summary: The local stress state in metallic glasses can be modulated without affecting their structure, leading to enhanced ductility and strain hardening during loading. The stress heterogeneity in metallic glasses results in shear band multiplication, ultimately enhancing their macroscopic ductility. Additionally, residual compressive stress significantly increases the strength of the glass and contributes to observed strain hardening.
