Carbon nanotube reinforced cementitious tailings composites: Links to mechanical and microstructural characteristics

Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the strength behavior of cementitious tailings backfill (CTB). The results show that CNTs significantly improve the strength and microstructure of CTB by inhibiting crack expansion and enhancing material integrity. Among them, ordinary multi-walled CNT (CNTPL) has the most significant impact on the mechanical properties of CTB. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that using the fractal properties of microstructure can better estimate the strength development of CTB specimens reinforced with different types of CNTs.

Microstructure and mechanical behavior of cemented gold/tungsten mine tailings-crushed rock backfill: Effects of rock gradation and content

Zhiqiang Huang et al.

Summary: Without appropriate waste management, the storage of tailings and waste rocks can cause devastating damage to ecosystems. This study evaluated the microstructure and strength behavior of cementitious tailings-crushed rock backfill with gold/tungsten tailings and rock contents. The results showed that tungsten tailings based backfills were more sensitive to crushed rock gradation, and the content and gradation of crushed rock significantly affected the failure modes of the backfills. The study's findings provide important guidance for the industrial uses of cementitious tailings-crushed rock backfill.

A comparative investigation on the effects of nanocellulose from bacteria and plant-based sources for cementitious composites

Muhammad Intesarul Haque et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two types of cellulose nanomaterials on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) paste, finding that both CNF and BC increased compressive and flexural strengths of the cement, with CNF also suppressing expansion due to alkali-silica reaction. At the microscale, CNF accelerated early age cement hydration while BC delayed it. Both nanocellulose types resulted in lower calcium hydroxide content and higher CSH in hydrated cement paste, with CNF showing more significant improvements in nanoporosity and microporosity reduction compared to BC.

Influence of 3D-printed polymer structures on dynamic splitting and crack propagation behavior of cementitious tailings backfill

Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: Originally developed for polymer materials, 3D printing is an encouraging technique to create versatile geometric shapes and high-precision construction elements. In this study, 3D-printed polymer structures were employed to significantly improve the ductility properties of cementitious materials like cemented tailings backfill (CTB). Various experiments were conducted to explore the dynamic splitting and crack propagation behavior of 3D-printed polymer reinforced CTBs. Results showed a strong strain rate dependence in the dynamic splitting characteristics, and the cross-shaped reinforced CTB exhibited the highest increase in tensile strength.

Effect of Flocculants Residue on Rheological Properties of Ultra-Fine Argillaceous Backfilling Slurry

Shuai Li et al.

Summary: The addition of flocculants increases the viscosity and yield stress of backfilling slurry. Increasing stirring time leads to the destruction of flocculant network structure, resulting in a decrease in viscosity and yield stress. Low temperature weakens the effectiveness of flocculants. The presence of binder further enhances the viscosity and yield stress of the slurry.
