Spinodal decomposition and the pseudo-binary decomposition in high-entropy alloys

Hengwei Luan et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermodynamic mechanism and general behavior of spinodal decomposition in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated. Contrary to the high mixing entropy theory, it was found that increasing the number of elements could increase the possibility of spinodal decomposition. The effects of temperature, entropy, and enthalpy were also clarified, and the high entropy effect on pseudo-binary decomposition was proposed. These findings provide a necessary paradigm for understanding and utilizing spinodal decomposition in HEAs.

Solving oxygen embrittlement of refractory high-entropy alloy via grain boundary engineering

Zhengqi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, large plasticity and high strength were achieved in NbMoTaW RHEAs through grain boundary engineering and the addition of metalloid B or C. The room-temperature brittleness of as-cast NbMoTaW RHEA was found to be caused by grain boundary segregation of oxygen, which was alleviated by the added metalloids, leading to a change in fracture morphology.

Designing nanoparticles-strengthened high-entropy alloys with simultaneously enhanced strength-ductility synergy at both room and elevated temperatures

J. X. Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel high-entropy alloy (HEA) was designed using computation-aided thermodynamic modeling, which maintained a stable coherent precipitation microstructure. It was found that increasing the concentration of Cr in the alloy improved both the strength and ductility at room temperature, and eliminated intergranular embrittlement at high temperatures, resulting in a transition from brittleness to ductility.

Precipitation enhancing strain hardening capability of ductile AlTiVZrNb high-entropy alloys upon dynamic loading

Xutao Wang et al.

Summary: Strain softening upon dynamic loading is a roadblock for BCC structured HEAs, but in this study, precipitation of alpha 2 phase was applied to enhance strain hardening capability. The alpha 2 precipitates with BOR interface effectively reduce slip length and generate high density dislocations for hardening.

Superior High-Temperature Strength in a Supersaturated Refractory High-Entropy Alloy

Rui Feng et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys show promising applications at high temperatures and a single-phase alloy with high-temperature strength can be designed based on intrinsic material characteristics. The high-temperature strength retention is attributed to mechanisms such as large atomic-size and elastic-modulus mismatches, insensitive temperature dependence of elastic constants, and dominance of non-screw character dislocations caused by strong solute pinning.

Heterogenous columnar-grained high-entropy alloys produce exceptional resistance to intermediate-temperature intergranular embrittlement

B. X. Cao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a novel heterogenous columnar-grained (HCG) approach that can effectively overcome the severe intergranular embrittlement issue of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) at intermediate temperatures. The newly developed HCG-HEA exhibits exceptionally high resistance to intergranular fractures and shows a combination of high tensile ductility and yield strength at 800 degrees C. This finding provides a new insight into innovative design of high-temperature materials with extraordinary mechanical properties.

Effect of the valence electron concentration on the yield strength of Ti-Zr-Nb-V high-entropy alloys

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of valence electron concentration on the yield strength of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) by designing and preparing a series of Ti-Zr-Nb-V HEAs. Experimental results showed that alloys with a low V/Zr ratio exhibited a single-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution structure, while alloys with a high V/Zr ratio contained a small amount of V2Zr phase. The yield strength of the alloys increased with an increasing V/Zr ratio.
