Direct laser metal deposition cladding of IN718 on DIN 1.2714 tool steel reinforced by the SiC nanoparticles

Mojtaba Rezaee Hajideh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of DLMD power and powder composition on the mechanical properties and microstructure of hot work steel forging dies. The addition of SiC nanoparticles to the DLMD powder improves wear resistance and microhardness of IN718. A higher laser power also leads to increased wear resistance and microhardness of the coating.

In situ modification of case-hardening steel 16MnCr5 by C and WC addition by means of powder bed fusion with laser beam of metals (PBF-LB/M)

Dominic Bartels et al.

Summary: This study investigates the design and modification of low-alloyed steel for laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) process by adding carbon black (C) nanoparticles and tungsten carbide (WC) particles. The results show that increasing the carbon and tungsten carbide content can enhance material hardness but adversely affect the processability. However, post-process heat treatments can achieve the desired hardness for specific applications. Additionally, the addition of tungsten carbide particles significantly improves wear resistance.

High strength Ti alloy fabricated by directed energy deposition with in-situ Cu alloying

Jian Han et al.

Summary: A high strength Ti-6Al-4V-8.5Cu component was successfully fabricated using directed energy deposition technology, and its microstructure and performance were investigated. The addition of Cu resulted in refined grains and the presence of Cu in solid solution and Ti2Cu particles. As a result, the hardness and tensile strength of the component were significantly improved.

Effect of cladding parameters on microstructure and defects in direct laser metal deposition of 24CrNiMo steel

Mohamad Ebrahimnia et al.

Summary: The study found that two different types of cracks can occur in multitrack clad samples, one is solidification cracks and the other is reheating cracks. By optimizing laser parameters, crackfree clad layers can be obtained through the prevention of formation of unfavorable constituents at interdendritic regions.

Microstructures, wear and corrosion resistance of laser composite surfaced austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304 SS) with tungsten carbide

Amitesh Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a composite surface on stainless steel through laser surface alloying, which improved the hardness and wear resistance of the material, reduced fretting wear kinetics and coefficient of friction. The formation of different carbides in the treated zone and the established mechanism of wear provide valuable insights for further research in material science.

Michail Nikolaevich Brykov et al.

Summary: The high-carbon, high-silicon steel was quenched at different temperatures and subjected to abrasive wear tests, which showed higher microhardness on surfaces after three-body abrasion compared to two-body abrasion. The differences in microhardness were attributed to variations in wear conditions and stability of retained austenite.
