Effect of NbC inoculants on the elastic properties and microstructure of additively manufactured IN718

J. F. S. Markanday et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of NbC inoculants on the elastic properties and microstructure of LBP-DED IN718. The addition of NbC particles increased the volume fraction of MC-type carbides and decreased that of the Laves phase. It was found that samples containing the inoculant exhibited marginally increased hardness and an enhanced {110} 211 Brass texture component. This textural enhancement is theorized to be a result of NbC restricting dendritic growth along specific directions during build, offering a method of achieving microstructural and textural control during additive manufacturing.

Microstructural defects governing torsional fatigue failure of additively manufactured as-built and heat-treated Inconel 718

Sanna F. Siddiqui et al.

Summary: Nickel-based superalloys, such as Inconel 718, are widely used in various industries due to their high strength, oxidation, and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the microstructural defects induced by additive manufacturing and their contribution to torsional fatigue fracture of Inconel 718 samples. Analysis of as-built and heat-treated samples reveals that surface and sub-surface defects, such as lack of fusion regions and un-melted powder particles, are the primary initiation points of torsional fatigue cracks.

Superplasticity of a hot rolled Mg-3Zn-0.5RE-0.5Zr (ZEK300) alloy

Zeinab Savaedi et al.

Summary: Shear punch testing was used to evaluate the superplasticity of a hot rolled fine-grained Mg-3Zn-0.5RE-0.5Zr (ZEK300) alloy. The alloy exhibited regions I, II, and III of deformation behavior typical of superplastic materials, with a grain size of 4.5 μm. In region II, the strain rate sensitivity indices of the ZEK300 alloy were determined to be 0.51, 0.48, and 0.41 at temperatures of 350, 400, and 450 degrees C, respectively. The average activation energy of 87.6 kJ mol-1 suggests that grain boundary sliding (GBS) facilitated by grain boundary diffusion is the dominant deformation mechanism.

Precipitation kinetics of niobium carbide (NbC) during homogenization heat treatment of additively manufactured inconel 718 superalloy

Sajad Ghaemifar et al.

Summary: The high cooling rate in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing can suppress the formation of niobium carbide (NbC) phase in Inconel 718 nickel-based superalloy parts. However, the NbC phase may precipitate during elevated temperature exposure. This study investigates the precipitation kinetics of NbC carbide during homogenization heat treatment and finds that increasing the homogenization temperature accelerates its formation. The diffusion of C and Nb atoms in the Ni matrix is identified as the underlying mechanism for NbC carbide formation during homogenization heat treatment.
