Investigation on microstructure and mechanical properties in explosive welded Mo-Cu/Cu interface

Yong Wei et al.

Summary: This study successfully joined the Mo-Cu and Cu plates via a solid-state explosive welding process. The joined metals maintained their prebonded properties without cracks and voids, and exhibited a maximum shear strength of 252.1 MPa and an average nanohardness of 4.50 GPa at the interface. Further characterization using EBSD, SEM, EDS, shear, and nanoindentation measurements revealed the formation of a laminated composite with severe and irregular plastic deformation at the interface.

Investigation on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the W-Cu joints fabricated by hot explosive welding

Kaiyuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the application of hot-explosive welding technique to address the challenges in welding W onto Cu. The results suggest that preheating W above its dynamic ductile-to-brittle transition temperature and reducing the input kinetic energy are two key factors for successful welding of thick W plates. The formation of mechanically mixed W-Cu phases and a few nanometers thick amorphous layer along the interface enhanced the bonding strength between W and Cu.

Effect of microstructure on mechanical properties of titanium-steel explosive welding interface

Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of titanium-steel explosive welding interface. Different zones with distinct microstructures were identified along the detonation direction, showing varying strengths and types of defects. The periodic wavy interface in the steady detonation zone exhibited the highest strength, while defects in the vortex area had significant effects on the mechanical properties.

Effect mechanism of oxide doping on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo-Y2O3 alloys

Dongjing Jiang et al.

Summary: Adding oxide strengthening phase to Mo alloy is an effective way to enhance its mechanical properties, but traditional mechanical alloying may lead to coarsening of oxide particles at grain boundaries. This study found that doping Mo-Y alloy with CeO2 decreased its compressive yield strength and hardness, while doping it with La2O3 increased these properties significantly. CeO2 doping decreased intergranular oxide particles and weakened interfacial drag force, while La2O3 doping resulted in more dispersed oxide particles at grain boundaries, inhibiting their coarsening and enhancing Zener force. This led to Mo grain refinement and improved mechanical properties of the Mo-Y alloy.

Effect of impact loading and heat treatment on microstructure and properties of multi-layered AZ31/AA1050 plates fabricated by single-shot explosive welding

Henryk Paul et al.

Summary: Eleven-layered AZ31/AA1050 composite plates were fabricated using explosive welding. The microstructural evolution of the interfacial layers and its correlation with mechanical properties were investigated. It was found that local melting and rapid solidification resulted in the formation of reaction regions with different phases and structures. The high-hardness phases grew rapidly during annealing, and pre-existing reaction regions transformed into a specific phase. Applying pressure prevented clad delamination but not the formation of linear cracks in a specific phase.

Effects of trace calcium and strontium on microstructure and properties of Cu-Cr alloys

Muzhi Ma et al.

Summary: Cu-Cr-Ca and Cu-Cr-Sr alloys fabricated by thermo-mechanical treatment showed improved mechanical and electrical properties compared to Cu-Cr alloy. The softening resistance of the alloys was significantly enhanced by the addition of Ca and Sr elements. The high strength of the alloys was mainly attributed to dislocation strengthening and precipitate strengthening.

Microstructure and mechanical properties investigation of explosively welded titanium/copper/steel trimetallic plate

Qiaoling Chu et al.

Summary: This work presents a systematic investigation of the microstructure and mechanical properties of an explosively welded Ti/Cu/Fe trimetallic plate. The simulation results using smoothed particles hydrodynamics (SPH) method reproduce the observed wave boundary, vortex zones, and jetting during high-velocity oblique impact welding process. Various examination methods confirm the formation of Cu4Ti intermetallics in the vortices and solid-solid bonded regions at the Ti/Cu interface, and the formation of ultra-fine Cu grains along the entire Cu/Fe interface. The nanoindentation tests reveal the individual properties of the typical phases formed.

Summary: In this study, W-Cu functionally graded materials with continuously gradient distribution of W (Cu) composition and microstructure were fabricated using a novel method of sedimentation and melt-infiltration. The addition of an appropriate amount of PVB in the suspension was found to expand the gradient distribution range of W-Cu FGMs. The results show that the prepared W-Cu FGMs exhibit excellent performance in terms of hardness, density, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity.
