Role of disclinations around kink bands on deformation behavior in Mg-Zn-Y alloys with a long-period stacking ordered phase

Tsubasa Tokuzumi et al.

Summary: The excellent mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with a Mg-based long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase are attributed to the kink bands formed by plastic deformation. This study investigated the strengthening mechanism of kink bands in directionally solidified single-phase LPSO Mg85Zn6Y9 alloys. It was found that the presence of disclinations and dislocation pile-ups contribute to the kink-band strengthening. The study provides insights into the factors responsible for kink-band strengthening in LPSO-phase Mg alloys.

Mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with different extrusion ratio and LPSO volume fraction

Wujun Yin et al.

Summary: The high elastic modulus and deformation kinks of the long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase in Mg-Zn-Y alloys significantly enhance the tensile yield strength, with a slight detriment or benefit to the ductility. Extrusion processing improves both strength and ductility through recrystallization of Mg grains. The activation of different plastic deformation mechanisms depends on the volume fraction and relative size of Mg and LPSO phases.

Shear banding-activated dynamic recrystallization and phase transformation during quasi-static loading of β-metastable Ti-12 wt % Mo alloy

L. Choisez et al.

Summary: This study reports the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization within adiabatic shear bands formed during the fracture of TRIP-TWIP beta-metastable Ti-12Mo alloy. Surprisingly, the formation of adiabatic shear bands and dynamic recrystallization was observed under quasi-static loading conditions at room temperature. The microstructural evolution during the fracture process was investigated using Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Automated Crystal Orientation mapping (ACOM-TEM), revealing complex transformations involving severe plastic deformation, crystalline rotation, and local precipitation of the omega at h phase.

Tensile behavior at various temperatures of the Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys with different initial morphologies of LPSO phases prior to extrusion

Xiaodong Yang et al.

Summary: The tensile behavior of extruded and peak-aged Mg-5Gd-3Y-xZn-0.5Zr alloys was investigated in terms of microstructural evolution, deformation modes, and mechanical properties at temperatures ranging from -100℃ to 300℃. The study found that the Zn content affected the distribution of intragranular and interdendritic phases, which in turn influenced the mechanical properties of the alloys. Additionally, the deformation modes during tensile testing were influenced by factors such as testing temperature, grain orientation, and LPSO morphology.

Precipitation behavior and its effect on the dynamic recrystallization of a novel extruded Al-Cu-Li alloy

Kuizhao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of precipitation on the recrystallization behavior of an Al-Cu-Li alloy during compression by designing different alloys with varying pre-precipitations through heat treatment processes. The results show that precipitation significantly affects the recrystallization volume fraction without changing the recrystallization mechanism. Additionally, different extruded texture fibers coordinate deformation through different softening mechanisms and stimulate the nucleation of lamellar grain in R-cube textures.

Combined effects of LPSO orientation and α-Mg texture on tensile anisotropy of an extruded Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy

Xiaojie Zhou et al.

Summary: The combined effects of LPSO orientation and alpha-Mg texture on tensile anisotropy were investigated, with the extrusion direction showing optimal mechanical properties, the 45 degrees direction exhibiting high elongation, and the transverse direction having inferior strength and elongation simultaneously. LPSO orientation contributes to strength anisotropy through different load-bearing strengthening effects along different tensile axes, while alpha-Mg texture contributes to strength anisotropy through stronger grain boundary strengthening effects. However, LPSO orientation, rather than alpha-Mg texture, accounts for ductility anisotropy.

Summary: The dislocation configuration around the 0001 0001 a 0001 a a slip system was successfully reproduced through crystal plasticity finite element analysis. Despite the formation of kink bands stimulated by the prismatic slip system, geometrical softening should be significant.
