Deformation mechanism in particulate metal matrix composites

M. Rezayat

Summary: A new approach based on modified stress and strain, combined with micromechanics and dislocation theory, has been developed to study the deformation mechanism in particulate metal matrix composites during hot deformation. The impact of influential processing parameters and reinforcement characteristics were successfully considered in the calculation of deformation activation energy and stress exponent. The developed formulation was validated through investigation of different aluminum matrix particulate composites with varying particle sizes and volume fractions.

Synergic effect of Te, Ni and MWCNT on creep behavior and microstructural evolution of Sn-1.0Ag-0.7Cu low-Ag solder

A. A. El-Daly et al.

Summary: In this study, composite solders were developed by incorporating MWCNT, Ni, and Te into SAC107 alloy. The results show that the addition of MWCNT and Cu leads to the formation of core multi-shell particles composed of Te atoms, linking MWCNT with the solder matrix. These structural variations significantly improve the creep resistance and creep life time of the alloy.

Review on study of internal load transfer in metal matrix composites using diffraction techniques

Pooja Maurya et al.

Summary: This systematic review enhances the understanding of metal matrix composites (MMCs) and their micromechanics by examining different diffraction-based methods of internal load transfer. Internal load transfer is significant in conventional MMCs with high volume fractions of reinforcement particles, and its mechanism depends on various factors. Advanced diffraction-based techniques, such as neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, have successfully been used to study internal load transfer in MMCs, allowing the measurement of elastic lattice strains and the calculation of phase stress. The information obtained about deformation and damage within the composite material contributes to the overall understanding of MMCs.

Enhancement of creep resistance of pure magnesium by magnesiothermic reaction with TiO2 nanoparticles

H. Kang et al.

Summary: The creep resistance of magnesium used in automotive powertrain components is a significant mechanical property. Adding metallic oxide particles through a magnesiothermic reaction can effectively enhance creep resistance. The study investigates the influence of MgO nanoparticles produced from decomposed oxygen atoms on the creep resistance in the Mg matrix with embedded TiO2 nanoparticles. The research findings suggest that lattice diffusion may dominate the creep deformation in magnesium, and the nanoparticles formed during creep deformation can suppress Coble creep, even at low temperatures and high stresses.

Zinc-Based Biodegradable Materials for Orthopaedic Internal Fixation

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Traditional inert materials used in internal fixation have caused complications and usually need to be removed with secondary surgeries. Biodegradable materials like magnesium, iron, and zinc alloys offer a new solution. Zinc alloys have comparable mechanical properties to traditional metals and a moderate degradation rate, making them a good candidate for internal fixation materials. Research on zinc-based biodegradable materials, including in vitro and in vivo studies, is progressing towards clinical applications in fracture fixation.

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction and crystal plasticity modeling study of martensitic transformation, texture development, and stress partitioning in deep-drawn TRIP steels

Peijun Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the micromechanics of formability of a lean duplex TRIP steel using S-XRD measurements and CPFEM modeling. It found that the ferrite phase plays a significant role in reducing stress concentrations in the martensite phase, while the austenite texture affects the distribution of the martensite phase. Deep-drawing processes and evaluations of phase fraction, texture, and residual stress distributions revealed that load partitioning to the ferrite phase in duplex TRIP steel leads to significantly reduced tensile hoop residual stresses in the alpha' martensite phase, resulting in improved formability.

Mechanisms of creep deformation in a rapidly solidified Al-Fe-V-Si alloy

M. Zhang et al.

Summary: Creep experiments on a rapidly solidified Al-8.5 wt% Fe-1.3 wt% V-1.7 wt% Si alloy suggest that it exhibits similar or superior deformation resistance compared to other high temperature Al alloys. Stress reduction results show that FVS0812 exhibits similar creep characteristics to those of other dispersion-strengthened alloys under constant structure conditions following stress reductions, even though the creep mechanism is determined to be significantly different. The role of the particles is to carry a portion of the applied load rather than causing dislocation detachment, local climb, or general climb.
