Heat Treatment, Microstructure and Corrosion Relationship on 316L SS Produced by AM

Gokhan Ozer

Summary: In this study, the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure, phase changes, hardness, porosity, and corrosion of 316L stainless steel produced by Additive Manufacturing were examined. It was found that the as-built microstructure deteriorated and the hardness decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature, while the corrosion resistance improved. The best corrosion resistance was achieved with heat treatment at 1150 degrees C for 2 hours.

Metastable pitting corrosion behavior and characteristics of passive film of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in NaCl solutions with different concentrations

Yu-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metastable pitting corrosion mechanism of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) produced Ti-6Al-4V. The passive films of samples were produced by potentiostatic polarization in NaCl solutions with different concentrations, and electrochemical measurements were employed to understand the influence of Cl- on the characteristics of passive films. The frequency of pitting nucleation and the pit dimension increase with increased Cl- concentration. The attack of Cl- promotes the dissolution of passive films, resulting in the formation of pitting corrosion due to the condensation of voids caused by the ingress of Cl-.

Localized corrosion of 304 stainless steel triggered by embedded MnS

Dan Li et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the localized corrosion of 304 stainless steel triggered by MnS in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution using various analytical techniques. The dissolution of MnS was found to start from the boundary areas and release elemental sulfur. The reoccurrence and disappearance of elemental sulfur during MnS dissolution suggested continuous consumption and conversion. Copper-containing compounds were observed deposited on residual MnS in the corrosion pit, while a thin Cr2O3 film covered the pit and thickened over time. Based on the evidence obtained, a more comprehensive MnS-induced localized corrosion mechanism was proposed.

Insight into microstructure, microhardness and corrosion performance of 2205 duplex stainless steel: Effect of plastic pre-strain

Kuiling Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure evolution of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) and its impact on microhardness and corrosion performance. The results indicated that the microhardness of DSS increased due to dislocation multiplication, strain-induced martensite generation, and grain refinement from pre-strain. The improved corrosion resistance at higher pre-strain levels (14% and 21%) was attributed to smaller surface energy difference, more strain-induced martensite, and more low-angle grain boundaries. The changed pitting nucleation sites with increasing pre-strain were strongly influenced by increased dislocation density and strain-induced martensite.

Effect of HAc on the Metastable Pitting Corrosion of 304 SS in NaCl Solution

Hanlu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of acetic acid and its concentration on the metastable pitting corrosion and uniform corrosion of 304 stainless steel in sodium chloride solution. The results showed that with an increase in HAc concentration, the corrosion rate decreased, the number of metastable pits decreased, and HAc promoted the growth rate of metastable pits and the transition to stable pits.

Effect of annealing treatment on microstructure, mechanical property and anti-corrosion behavior of X2CrNi12 ferritic stainless steel

Rui Li et al.

Summary: The effect of annealing temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and anti-corrosion behavior of X2CrNi12 ferritic stainless steel was investigated. Increasing annealing temperature prevents the precipitation of (Fe, Cr)(23)C-6, leading to improved mechanical properties but decreased elongation. The steel annealed at 770 degrees C exhibits the best corrosion resistance.
