Solid-state cold spray additive manufacturing of pure tantalum with extraordinary high-temperature mechanical properties

Young-Kyun Kim et al.

Summary: Solid-state cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) was used to fabricate pure tantalum (Ta) and its high-temperature mechanical and deformation behavior were investigated. The CSAM-fabricated Ta consisted of irregularly shaped, elongated powder particles perpendicular to the spraying direction. Microstructural evolution occurred along the boundaries between powder particles in response to harsher plastic deformation. Compression test results showed that the room temperature yield strength of CSAM Ta was approximately 901 MPa, significantly higher than conventional Ta processes. Furthermore, CSAM Ta exhibited excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures up to approximately 950 degrees C, attributed to the interaction between high-temperature oxidation behavior and microstructural evolution, i.e. dynamic recrystallization. The relationship between microstructure, room-to-high-temperature mechanical properties, and deformation behaviors are discussed.

Interface microstructure and mechanical properties of copper-steel joints with nickel transition layer prepared by ultrasonic additive manufacturing

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: To solve the problems of intergranular copper infiltration, liquid phase separation, and thermal cracks during fusion welding of copper and 304 stainless steel, UAM technology was used to consolidate a nickel transition layer on the stainless steel surface for surface modification. Copper-304 stainless steel overlap joints were obtained using the pulse TIG process. The study found that the introduction of a nickel interlayer can achieve metallurgical isolation between copper and steel and relieve interfacial stress. A high-quality brazed joint with a nickel interlayer thickness of 0.1 mm was formed between stainless steel and copper, with an ultimate tensile strength of 165 MPa at room temperature. The joint fracture occurred near the fusion line close to the copper side, showing a ductile fracture mode.

Material flow path and extreme thermomechanical processing history during additive friction stir deposition

Nikhil Gotawala et al.

Summary: By combining theoretical and experimental methods, we have developed an experimentally-informed modeling framework that reveals the three-dimensional flow path of the material and quantifies the thermal and deformation history. The study shows that the feed material undergoes extreme thermomechanical processing during AFSD, with high temperatures and significant strain rates. The resulting microstructure is uniform and has been verified experimentally.

Microstructure and interface evolution of diamond/ Cu composites prepared via ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM)

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: Diamond-copper laminated composites with Cr-coating were prepared using ultrasonic additive manufacturing method. The microstructure and interfacial configuration between Cr-diamond and copper matrix were analyzed using various microscopy techniques. The study revealed excellent solid bonding between Cr-diamond and the matrix, with significant grain refinement and dynamic recrystallization at the interface. These composites exhibited high thermal conductivity and could open up new possibilities in low-temperature, low-pressure, free-design, and open fabrication of particle-reinforced metal matrix composites.

Summary: High-quality lead-free relaxor-ferroelectric BCNT electroceramics were fabricated using the modified Pechini method, and the influence of cerium dopant on the material properties was studied. The doping affected the density and sintering temperature, but had a positive effect on crystallinity. BCNT ceramics showed increased grain size and significant changes in shrinkage, making them suitable for commercial applications such as electrode systems and multi-layered structures.
