Micromechanical modeling of damage evolution and fracture behavior in particle reinforced metal matrix composites based on the conventional theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity

He Wu et al.

Summary: The particle/matrix interface of metal matrix composites (MMCs) can strengthen the material by introducing plastic strain gradients. However, limited research has considered all damage mechanisms associated with the particle/matrix interface. In this study, a finite element model based on conventional theory of mechanism-based strain-gradient (CMSG) plasticity was developed to analyze the damage evolution and failure behavior of SiCp/AZ91 composite. The results show that the plastic strain gradients can describe interface debonding and provide a more reasonable distribution of stress and plastic strain compared to the classical J2 flow theory.

Evaluation of thermal processing and properties of 422 martensitic stainless steel for replacement of 4140 steel in diesel engine pistons q

D. T. Pierce et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the thermal and mechanical properties of martensitic stainless steel 422 as a potential replacement for 4140 steel in heavy-duty diesel engine pistons. The findings showed that reducing the tempering temperature improved the elevated temperature strength of 422, though it had no significant effect on thermal conductivity. Compared to 4140 steel, 422 exhibited higher elevated temperature strength and lower thermal conductivity, which may require a piston redesign to fully utilize its improved high temperature strength. The study also discussed material selection and alloy design strategies to address the shortcomings of martensitic stainless steels like 422 as drop-in replacements.

Room and high-temperature mechanical behavior of reduced graphene oxide-aluminum (RGO-Al) composite wire conductors-A micro-mechanical investigation

Tim Vogel et al.

Summary: In this study, a micro-mechanical investigation was conducted on cold-drawn reduced graphene oxide (RGO) reinforced aluminum (Al) composite wires. The results showed that the composite wires exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to unreinforced Al sample over the entire temperature range. This was attributed to the effective grain growth inhibition achieved by RGO via grain boundary pinning. The RGO-Al composite wires demonstrated higher strength, heat resistance, and ease of fabrication, making them a promising alternative to conventional HT Al alloy-based conductors.

Superior high-temperature oxidation resistance of nanocrystalline 304 austenitic stainless steel containing a small amount of Si

X. C. Cai et al.

Summary: The NC-304 austenitic stainless steel with low Si content shows superior high-temperature oxidation resistance compared to steels with excessive Si addition. The unique nanocrystalline microstructure and distribution feature of Si in NC-304 accelerate the formation of a continuous SiO2 healing layer, effectively reducing the oxidation rate at least up to 1000 degrees C.

Experimental study and micromechanical modelling of the effective elastic properties of Fe-TiB2 composites

Khaoula Dorhmi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effective properties of Fe-TiB2 composites obtained after hot or cold rolling, measuring the elastic moduli experimentally and using various methods. Microstructure analyses based on SEM observations are conducted to characterize particle and cracks distribution, and 3D representative microstructures are generated using the RSA method. The overall elastic behavior of the composites is determined numerically through full-field FFT-based simulations, showing a significant improvement in specific stiffness compared to standard steels regardless of processing conditions.

The effect of TiB2 ceramic particles on Portevin-Le Chatelier behavior of TiB2/AlMg metal matrix composites

Han Chen et al.

Summary: Metal matrix composites (MMCs) have excellent mechanical properties and the influence of TiB2 ceramic particles on Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) behavior in a TiB2/AlMg composite is systematically investigated in this study. The presence of particles decreases the critical strain of PLC at high strain rate, but the difference becomes smaller with decreasing strain rate. The dual effects of particles on dislocation waiting time are discussed, showing that the effect of particles weakens with decreasing strain rate.
