Dissolved and suspended organic matter dynamics in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (NW Africa)

S. Valiente et al.

Summary: The Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) is a highly dynamic region with large fluxes of sinking organic matter. The distribution of dissolved and suspended particulate organic matter in this area is influenced by the position of transects and different water masses, indicating the role of biogeochemical processes in shaping water mass properties. However, mineralization of DOM and POM is low, highlighting the importance of sinking fluxes of organic matter for mineralization processes.

High-resolution variability of dissolved and suspended organic matter in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone

Ruben Campanero et al.

Summary: In this study, the distributions of dissolved and suspended organic matter in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) were investigated at high resolution. The results indicate that the input of Sahara dust and release of DOM from sinking particles are key factors contributing to the complexity of DOM and POM dynamics in the CVFZ.

Eddy-enhanced primary production sustains heterotrophic microbial activitiesin the Eastern Tropical North Atlantic

Quentin Devresse et al.

Summary: Mesoscale eddies have a significant impact on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the ocean. This study investigates the effects of cyclonic eddies on autotrophic and heterotrophic microbial activity in the Eastern Tropical North Atlantic. The results show that the injection of nutrients stimulates autotrophic production, but the distribution of biomass and metabolic activities is uneven within the eddy. The study highlights the importance of submesoscale processes in regulating metabolic activities in the ocean.

Generation Mechanisms of Mesoscale Eddies in the Mauritanian Upwelling Region

Ahmad Fehmi Dilmahamod et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical processes driving the cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies originating from the Mauritanian coastal current system. The results show that a baroclinically unstable state of the boundary current during the intensification phase in summer drives the generation of eddies. The interaction between the coastal flow and the sloping topography, as well as flow separation and transport of different water masses, play important roles in the generation and intensification of the eddies.

Dissolved organic matter released by two marine heterotrophic bacterial strains and its bioavailability for natural prokaryotic communities

Summary: Marine heterotrophic prokaryotes (HP) are key players in organic matter processing in the ocean, affecting the growth and diversity of in situ prokaryotic communities in the Mediterranean Sea. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) produced by HP influences pathways for DOM cycling and changes in microbial metabolism and diversity in the ocean.

Oceanic primary production decline halved in eddy-resolving simulations of global warming

Summary: Research indicates that global warming will result in a significant decline in ocean primary production. While the simulations show that the impact of eddy parameters is minimal, at the highest resolution, the decline in primary production in subpolar gyres is reduced by half.
