Heat Storage in the Upper Indian Ocean: The Role of Wind-Driven Redistribution

Jing Duan et al.

Summary: The heat content in the Indian Ocean has been increasing due to anthropogenic greenhouse warming. The storage location and method of anthropogenic heat in the Indian Ocean are not fully understood yet. Analysis of various datasets reveals a spatial pattern of ocean heat content trend, with enhanced warming in the subtropical southern Indian Ocean but weak to minimal warming in the tropical Indian Ocean. Surface wind changes play a crucial role in shaping this pattern.

Impact of the Deep Chlorophyll Maximum in the Equatorial Pacific as Revealed in a Coupled Ocean GCM-Ecosystem Model

Qidong Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) on the ocean state in the equatorial Pacific Ocean using a coupled ocean general circulation model (OGCM)-ocean ecosystem model. The results show that DCM acts to reduce mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific and increase the amplitude of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Two competing mechanisms, including direct warming and indirect cooling, are identified to be responsible for the DCM effects.

Impact of Chlorophyll Shading on the Peruvian Upwelling System

V. Echevin et al.

Summary: The study shows that chlorophyll shading has significant impacts on the Peru upwelling system, leading to surface cooling, more realistic subsurface stratification, slowdown of alongshore currents, and shoaling of the oxycline. The shading effect needs to be considered in both physical and coupled physical-biogeochemical regional models of upwelling systems.

Interannual-to-Decadal Variations of Particulate Organic Carbon and the Contribution of Phytoplankton in the Tropical Pacific During 1981-2016: A Model Study

Jun Yu et al.

Summary: This study utilized a basin-scale model to investigate the spatio-temporal variability of particulate organic carbon (POC) and phytoplankton carbon (PhyC) in the tropical Pacific from 1981 to 2016. The findings suggest that phytoplankton carbon contributes differently to POC in iron-limited vs. nitrogen-limited regions, with significant interannual variability associated with El Nino-Southern Oscillation events and Pacific Decadal Oscillation regime shifts. The study highlights the impact of iron and nitrogen co-limitations on phytoplankton dynamics and physical forcing on the carbon cycle of the tropical Pacific, with implications for the global carbon cycle.

Coupling ocean-atmosphere intensity determines ocean chlorophyll-induced SST change in the tropical Pacific

Feng Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of phytoplankton pigments on sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific using a hybrid coupled model (HCM). The modeling results revealed that the chlorophyll effect on SST is sensitive to the coupling intensity represented by a tunable coefficient alpha. A threshold was found around alpha = 1.01, where the sign of SST responses can change depending on the coupling intensity.

Summertime increases in upper-ocean stratification and mixed-layer depth

Jean-Baptiste Sallee et al.

Summary: The study shows that from 1970 to 2018, the density contrast across the base of the mixed layer in the world ocean increased and the mixed layer itself became deeper. The changes indicate a possible shift in the mixed layer during an era of global climate change, although important uncertainties remain.

Rectified Effects of Interannual Chlorophyll Variability on the Tropical Pacific Climate Revealed by a Hybrid Coupled Physics-Biology Model

Feng Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rectified effect of interannual chlorophyll variability (ICV) on the tropical Pacific climate, finding that ICV weakens ENSO amplitude and induces a cooling effect in the eastern equatorial Pacific. Stability analysis reveals two feedback loops through which ICV impacts ENSO dynamics, highlighting the significant role of marine phytoplankton biomass in modulating low-frequency climate variability.
